so the beautiful (but noisy) fan I had just died, beyond repair, and I purchased this one based on aesthetics & consumer reviews. another fan I looked at was $30 less, but this one received so many comments about how well made it was, I decided to go for it, and am glad so far that I did.
just upacking the box, you can tell this is a well made item. the heavy metal base (to be hidden discreetly under the nickel finished base cover) is where most of the weight comes in. the fan does need to be assembled, but it was a surprise to find the screws actually in fastened loosely where they ultimately need to go, instead of in a bag you need to sort through. and I have to add that the screws are the high quality sort, complete with washers and built to tighten down (the last thing you want with a fan is any sort of rattling) and when tightened down they didn't fall apart under the screwdriver like other cheap things I've assembled.
assembly wasn't hard, though I have to say I was a bit intimidated by the instruction booklet - hunter, think about redesigning this to be more user friendly! the booklet contains black and white photos which look more like the engine of a car than the assembly of a fan, and the individual parts are given long and complicated names which aren't helpful unless you're up on fan engineering jargon. I ultimately used the manual to protect the floor from scratches, and assembled the thing based on intuition - which was pretty easy, given that all the screws were already in place (and most only need to be loosened) and instead of dealing with a long electrical cord, it's broken up into segments with simple foul proof connectors - the engineering far outweighs the not so helpful instruction manual.
aesthetics are my main concern with this product, and it exceeds my expectations. clean design, quality metal parts, soft brushed satin finish. I'm picky about my furnishings, but this fan doesn't need to hide in a closet when guest come over.
extra bonus - the base is elevated slightly from the ground, so if the cord is longer than what you need you can just tuck it under.
the grill around the fan is secured with a band of metal that clamps in one spot, vs. several clips that secure the grills together. slightly more difficult to open if you want to clean dust off it, but aesthetically looks much better. I figure I will look at the fan every day, and clean it once every few months, so am more than happy with the trade off.
after plugging it in to test out - works no problem. on the lowest speed setting it makes no noise at all. unbelievable! speeds two and three are increasingly louder, but this has to do with the air, there is not rattle from the fan at all. I'll be using this in lieu of a ceiling fan near my bed, so the gentle breeze and zero noise of the low setting exceeds expectations.
the knob that controls oscillation spins and seems loose, but this doesn't affect how it works. I am slightly disappointed with the limited telescoping option - without measuring I'm guessing that the center of the fan can be adjusted to sit between 2 - 3 feet above the floor, but what makes up for that is the knobs that tighten down the tilt of the fan actually work extremely well and hold it securely in place (on my last fan I could never tighten enough, it always ended up pointing to the floor).
