Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Honeywell QuietCare Cool-Moisture Humidifier, 3-Gallon, HCM-630

Customer Review: Not so quiet to me
Summary: 3 Stars

I've been using this humidifier for a couple days now. First thing I noticed is how loud it is. On high speed it's about as loud as a box fan, but with a higher pitch. Medium isn't much quieter, and low is still quite loud to me. Maybe I've been spoiled by my previous humidifier which was an ultrasonic model. It was nearly completely quiet (only heard a slight gurgle of water occasionally). I used that one every night, but due to the loudness of this model I'll probably only use it when necessary.
Another thing I wish it had was another handle on the side or bottom of the water container. When I hold it under my bathtub faucet to fill it up it's quite hard to hold since there's no clear place to hold it upside down. The best way I've figured to hold it is to put my hand inside of it and hold it by the same opening the water is going into. This results in a wet hand, but better than dropping the thing.
The built in humidity control seems prone to error. After leaving the unit off for some time and the humidity control set at 3 I turn the fan control on, but it thinks the room is humid enough. My hygrometer says it's about 32% humidity in the room, and the previous day the fan turned on at 32% humidity. So I temporarily set the humididy control to 4 then came back and set it to 3 after about 30 minutes. Then the fan stayed on until I turned the humidity control down to about 2. So it appears the sensor is prone to being saturated when air is not flowing through the unit, thus making it think it's more humid in the room than it really is.
Other than that, it DOES humidify the air in the room. For example on high speed it increased the humidity of a 400sq ft 72-degree room from 32% to 36% in about an hour. Now only if it could do it more quietly I'd be happier.

Customer Review: Used for 5 years and happily replacing with same!

When we moved to a desert (Utah) I discovered what BOOGERS were! LOL! Summer, winter - didn't matter - would wake up the next morning needing serious nasal work! Chose this one because it had speed controls as well as a very basic hygrometer built in. Have never been sorry - must've gotten a good one - because we are JUST NOW having fan issues... Would not attempt to use it other than overnight - it's not meant to run around the clock I'd imagine....have put it on a lamp timer to turn on just before bed time and off when we get up. Also try to leave it WITH water (aka fill it in the morning as you get up) - the "wicking" effect of the filter is hampered when it runs completely dry - other than turning filter upside down to improve water saturation just before using it - no complaints.

As for the filters - don't buy them in stores but look online for deals and get in quantity - I also didn't change them as much as they recommended - I'd wait until the tank gets a little slimy and then clean it out and put the new tank purifier in - also waited until the filter would get full of minerals. (we have a softener) Last year I took it all apart and cleaned out the fan blades - since we are also very dusty in this area it got pretty bad....but all in all it's a great unit! Not sure if I'm going to buy my replacement online or at a local store for ease of return IF I get a lemon like so many have reported....still deciding.

Was also able to get bedroom to above 50% - at that point backed the fan speed down to spare water levels and reduce moisture level. Would NOT use this as a vaporizer type sick room humidifier....

Customer Review: My Sweety can Breath Easy! Great Gadget Keeps Air Comfy!

I just received the Honeywell HCM-630 a few days ago. It was On Sale for $43.21... an awesome deal! I can't believe how fast the shipping was...not even 3 days... and best of all it was Free Super Saver Shipping...

It works better than expected. My Sweetheart has chronic sinus problems... she needed it... I did some quick reviews... and ordered it late at night. We live in a small trailer with forced air heat... very dry... This contraption does a great job of keeping the main living area in the Comfort Zone... as per the little hygrometer we purchased separately...

It's very quiet... not that we care about that very much... but it is... We don't have to crank up the humidity adjustment for it to do a good job for our space. The specifications state that it's suitable for a medium/large room... Check! ...it is. We have to fill the tank a little more often than we like to... but that's OK given the job it does.

It's easy to use... mindless really...

The Filter is about $10 bucks or so... but it's very large and it looks like a very good one... it's not some cheap, foamy, furry thing... with regular rinsing, cleaning, etc... it'll probably last awhile.

Highly Recommended.

Get It! Enjoy!

Customer Review: Inferior to older Honeywell humidifiers
Summary: 2 Stars

We bought this humidifier to replace one that was purchased about six years ago, also a Honeywell model. That model had a two gallon tank and would shut off if the water ran out. Compared to that, this newer model has a relatively TINY tank, at perhaps a gallon or so. Since the unit is rated at 3 gallons per day output, that would mean quit a bit of refilling on very dry days. On our old unit, the tank had a handle on the underside (where the fill cap is) so that when you filled it, you had something to hold on to. Not so with the new unit. And to make matters even more difficult, the bottom of this new tank is not flat, so you can't just set it under the faucet and expect it to stay there.

The most annoying thing though is the absence of an automatic shutoff and indicator light when the water level gets too low. Because the tank is in the back of the unit, it is hard to see the water level. This thing will run and run and run without water, drying out the filter so you have to take it out an re-soak it again. While stylistically nicer, this units functionality is a real step down from previous generations of their humidifiers.

Customer Review: Excellent Mid Priced Humidifier
Summary: 5 Stars

The humidifier does a good job keeping my 700sqft apartment humidified. I have to refill the 3 gallon tank once in the morning and once at night. I bought it for my pet tortoise who needs higher humidity, but it has really helped my sinus problems and dry skin problems. The tortoise's dry skin has cleared up nicely, also.

I have NO trouble removing or inserting the tank. It is very easy and fits securely into the base. NO leaks. It must have been redesigned from the previous complaints. There are pegs on the bottom of the tank that fit into the base so you know you have placed it correctly.

I use filtered water and have not had the problem with white dust.

You will not see water vapor with this humidifier. If you let it run for the day while you are at work, you can feel the difference in the air when you walk into the room.

The fan noise did not bother me. It was a quiet soothing white noise sound. If you are a picky sleeper and can't tolerate new sounds then you will probably be unhappy with *any* fan driven appliance. The humidifier does not make any excess fan noise and runs smoothly.
