Customer Review: Not so perfect for me

I read the reviews of this product and many others before settling on this tea thermos, which I purchased about a year ago. Yes, it keeps hot things hot for quite a while, like all double walled vacuum insulated stainless steel thermos-type products. It also didn't leak, which was great. But I ran into some problems with mine.
1.)The entire cap unit had a very strong "new plastic" smell that was very persistent. I couldn't even drink out of it. I ended up boiling it for hours multiple days in a row, hoping to volatilize whatever compounds I was smelling and get rid of them all. This helped a bit, but I never did get rid of the plastic smell completely. I ended up not drinking through the lid; I would just use it as a cap and drink out of the thermos like it was a cup. Also, the lid unit is very difficult to clean and just as difficult to get it to dry. Too many crevices.
2.)The stainless steel on the very top is like a second cap; a cap to the closeable lid. Mine did not fit on correctly; it did that thing where as you tighten it, it would suddenly come out of the threads before being tight enough, and was, as such, untightenable. That got thrown away.
I emailed Highwave about my problems, and they claimed they'd never heard of either of those problems. They offered me no solution. I used it a year, then over the summer I forgot about some tea I had brewed and mold grew all over the inside of the lid unit. With all it's hidden little crevices, there was no way to recover the lid. Since I never liked it anyway I just threw away the whole thing. I decided to get a normal Nissan thermos and use a tea strainer or tea bags.
A great solution for those of us who like fresh tea is to get your own tea bags that you can fill with anything you want. Then you don't need any kind of special tea thermos. Just bring those with you in a small container when you go out for the day. Search Amazon for Disposable Tea Bags Disposable Tea Bags #K4164. I buy this kind at my local tea shop. They are biodegradable & compostable, and they work great.
