Customer Review: Good product, but different than the picture

I originally bought a knife block from TruBamboo that was falling apart out of the box so I took it back and ordered this. The Henckels block is sturdy and well constructed, very solid. However, I think it is important to note that the picture is slightly different from the actual product. The design is basically the same, but the picture shows 4 larger slots, but the block I received only has two. So my chefs knife, santoku, and 10" slicing knife wouldn't all fit, but I used a drill to widen one of the slots. It is also good to note that my cleaver doesn't fit in the cleaver slot, which will only hold a 3.5" width cleaver and mine was 4". So I did buy another cleaver to fit the slot. Overall a 5 star product, but I gave 4 stars since the picture isn't the exact product I received.Customer Review: Makes me happy!

I finally have a knife block that will store all my knives!!! It doesn't seem to matter what size or shape the knife is, there is a slot for it! Especially the cleaver!!! On my old one, I had to put a nail on the back to hold the cleaver. Not with this one. And I love having our steak knives in the block along with the other good knives. I can't say enough good about this block. Its not the fanciest hardwood and there is almost no figure to the wood, but its still just fine.
In our block we have a 10" slicer, a 10" Chef's, 7" Santuko, 5" Cleaver, 8" bread, 8" fillet, 6" fillet, 4" paring, 6" Paring, Sharpening steel, 8 steak knives, and a 10" awful TV Knife that my wife seems to love! Ack!
Gotta love this block! It does make me happy!

Just got this today on my doorsteps and I tried it out right away. First thing I noticed out of the box was that build quality is excellent. The wood is sturdy and had a nice scent(like good lumber).
The storage block looks nice in my kitchen on the counter top. I've got it next to some bottles of wine and they are a nice mix visually. Next I placed all the smaller and medium sized knives in the storage unit. They all fit fine and looked nice hidden in the unit.
Then I tried sticking in my big butcher knife and unfortunately it didn't fit. Not by much, but it still didn't fit. Aside from this one hiccup, this storage unit is basically perfect. Looks nice, sturdy design, and good price.

I finally decided to buy a knife storage block and I'm very happy with it. My knives are mismatched. They fit well into this block. It holds my long bread knife, a large wide knife, several paring knives and a set of steak knives. It is so handy. The larger knives had been laying on a shelf. It is nice to have all my knives in one place. I don't like having too many gadgets on my counter. Like others have commented, this block sits nicely to the side so isn't in my way.
The only reason for 4 stars is that there was a strong shellac odor when I opened up the block. I didn't know whether it was safe to keep or not. I decided to keep it since the inside appears unpainted. The odor went away.

After reading all the good reviews and looking at the picture, I thought this would be a great choice for me. Unfortunately, the block only fit two of my larger knives, leaving 4 big knives without a home. Maybe if there were room for 4 or 5 larger knives I would have made due and gotten rid of a redundant knife or two, but as it was, this block is useless.
Strangely, there was enough room on the rightmost column of slots that the slots could have been made sufficiently wide for my needs. For whatever reason, they didn't design it for my selection of knives. Oh well.
All that said, it seemed like a nice enough block otherwise.
