I have been using a regular all metal serrated knife for as long as I can remember to slice my homemade bread. We always ended up with slightly mishapen cuts, slices too thick or too thin or both on one slice...
Now that we're making a loaf or two a week, it was time to invest in something that worked better...but I didn't realize HOW much better this was til I tried it out on hard rustic loaves, soft loaves, you name it.
Each slice, from the saw like small metal piece attached, is cut with you having full control of a straight slice of whatever thickness you desire.
Your drawback on this over a metal knife is you can't throw it in the dishwasher. However, if it's only used on bread, you shouldn't need to. It's a very small blade and crumbs just fall off.
Utilized by cutting the bread in a sawing motion. You don't have to be careful. It does it easy and quickly.
Conclusion: Regardless of what brand you get, I think there is no better way to cut bread than one designed like this.

The blades have a scalloped edge with a double bevel to maximize cutting surface and retain sharpness. Only the tips ever touch the cutting board. The rest of the blade stays sharp for many loaves to come.
This knife is made from a fine quality, domestic cherry hardwood. Colors and grain patterns vary as this is a natural product.
