I'll start with a disclaimer about the coffee taste - I'm not going to judge the brewer based on it. I've used k-cup brewers for almost four years, and I really like some of those coffees...and really dislike others. Some people blast the k-cup brewers for having bad coffee, but there's a lot of variation between blends. So, I'm going to assume that the same applies here. That said, I've only tried the sample pack that came with the brewer and think it's okay. A bit weak, but not bad.
As for the brewer itself, it's greatest strength for some people is possibly it's greatest weakness for others - it's compact. Small is great for some things, but it also means that they couldn't include some features that I find important for home use. If you're looking for a no-frills, compact brewer, this might be a five-star product for you. If you're looking for a home brewer or one with some more features, this might fall short. I think that this is the residential version of the Senseo brewer used in some hotels (such as the Marriot that I stayed in last month). These are awesome compared to the single-cup drip systems in hotels, but I'm not sold on it being a great choice for a home. Maybe a good choice for an office or a dorm room, though, or for traveling as at least one reviewer mentioned. Here's my take on it:
Pros:
- Fairly inexpensive (and quite a bit cheaper than similar k-cup machines)
- Compact design, so counter space isn't really an issue
- Internal electrical cord storage so you won't have extra cord laying around (I love that!)
- Very simple operation
Possible Cons:
- Cannot accept coffee mugs taller than ~4", so you might want to measure your cups before ordering. Several of mine won't fit.
- No drip tray. I can imagine someone (okay, me) filling the water reservoir, then accidentally bumping the start button as they're extracting or inserting the coffee pod holder...then rushing to get the coffee mug placed under the spot before hot water/coffee starts flowing over the counter (or office cubicle). You could use the hotel approach and place the brewer itself onto a tray with raised edges, though.
- No water reservoir. I've been spoiled with my k-cup brewers that hold 60 ounces of water and don't need me to add water for each cup.
- Takes three minutes to brew a cup of coffee. Not bad for travel or office use, but I'm used to getting a cup in about a minute at home because my larger brewer preheats the water. This becomes more relevant if more than one person wants a cup.
Alternative - If you want to use Senseo pods (perhaps some left around the house) and have a way to make hot water, you might want to try this first. After using this machine and seeing that it took three minutes to brew, I decided to try something. I can boil eight ounces of water in my microwave in less than three minutes, so I tried making coffee using a pod and boiling water. I boiled the water, placed a pod into the cop, and stirred it around for about a minute. Honestly, it tasted about the same to me and was pretty good coffee. I tried various temperatures of water, tried heating the water with and without the pod in it, and tried keeping the pod in the water for various lengths of time. For me, boiling the water worked better because it seemed to get more coffee flavor out of the pods, and adding the pod after boiling worked best because my pods leaked some grounds when boiled in the water. When I lived in a dorm, I had a Hot Shot hot water dispenser that would also work for this, and those actually cost a little less than this brewer. Just a thought.
