Customer Review: Makes good coffee but...
Summary: 3 Stars
I was not 100% sure I was ready to depart from the traditional coffee maker style...and I'm still not sure I like this "Brewstation" design.
For starters, I am skeptical of having all the electronics above the heating element - I've owned 2 coffee makers (in the past) with the liquid crystal display and they both went bad within a year or two. Unfortunately, all the programmable coffee makers have LCD readouts so there isn't much choice. My 11 year-old Mr. Coffee Elite (which finally departed...RIP) had the red LED display which, to me, makes better sense given the constant heat fluctuations.
Anyway, here's what I like about this coffee maker:
1) Cool blue light & modern look
2) It makes good coffee
3) The pour button design works really well - no drips
4) Programming is easy
Now, for the downside
1) LCD technology - questionable unit life.
2) No burner temperature control (personally, I like to be able to drink the coffee as soon as it's poured). If you come back an hour after the coffee is done brewing, the coffee is too hot to drink because of the set burner temperature. (Mr. Coffee Elite had a temperature control knob.)
3) Disassembling the coffee maker is more of a chore and takes some getting used to. You've got to lift the back handle straight up and then out to remove it from the BrewStation.
4) Other than the small gauge on the side of the caraffe, there isn't a way to measure the amount of water being added to the unit. For me, I have to lift the caraffe from the sink, wait for the water to stop rocking back and forth and then add or subtract water, repeat. (Not a huge deal but it's important to note that this adds to the delay in getting the coffee ready.) It'd be nice if there were a gauge in the location where you pour the water.
5) Actual brew time is SLOW...probably over 10 minutes for a full pot.
I miss my original Mr. Coffee Elite...that's the unit I would have purchased had it still been available. Unfortunately, like so many products, the Mr. Coffee's looked cheap in the store and all had the LCD displays...so I took a chance on the BrewStation.
