"Modern" pull-top cans are a hazard. After I got careless while opening a can of cat food, I had a trip to the ER and half a dozen stitches in my hand. I was lucky: no tendons or nerves got cut.
I found this opener on Amazon. It works. It seems thoughtfully designed. Yes, you need to hold the top lever down to operate it; because the activating lever is on the top, this adds to the safety and stability of the product. There is a slight change in motor pitch when a can has gone around once.
Unlike manual side-cut openers, this model makes it easy to remove the lid. Unlike conventional can openers the blade does not mix with the can contents, and the edges left are not dangerous.

My father has arthritic hands and wanted a can opener. I did the reviews but overlooked one important fact. It has no magnet so the lid does not lift. It cuts just below the rim on the side with a very smooth and clean cut but it is difficult to determine when the can opener has made a full revolution. The top is also very difficult to remove after the cutting has occurred. I do not thik I can return this as it was purchased the beginning of Dec. for a Christmas gift and my father did not save the original packaging. I took it and purchsed him anotehr Hamilton Beach which was cheaper but did have a magnet. I guess it will look good on my countertop now but thought I would at least warn others.Customer Review: Excellent Can Opener

Several years ago we bought a hand-held can opener that separated the can lid from the body in such a way that it left no sharp edges. We've been spoiled. When it came time to replace that can opener we were surprised to find that most of the openers out there still worked on the old technology, meaning that it opened the can by cutting through the lid. The result was a lid edge as sharp as any well-honed knife. We were very pleased to find this Hamilton Beach opener. It's made with quality and works even better than our old can opener, plus it stands on it's own and doesn't have to be hand-held. It looks nice on the kitchen counter, too. I always worry about can openers, because food gets on the blade and spoiled food can contaminate the next new can. The blades are so difficult to clean, especially on electric openers. On this one, the blade never touches the food. It opens the can from the side of the top seam!!! It also eliminates the sharp edges on the lid!!! It is beautiful in the kitchen and a joy to use. This is a great value when you consider what you get compared to other openers. The handle on the top is easy to push down. Excellent design and engineering. Thank you Hamilton Beach. I bought this can opener because the description claims it can open the pop-top style cans. These cans leave a sharp rim around the opening after removing the tops and this tends to damage plastic scrapers when attempting to clean out the remnants of the contents. Many cans can not be opened from the underside with traditional can openers because they are rounded for stacking. Well, this opener does exactly what it claims, and, in my wife's words, "works like a charm." I should mention that after using the opener it is a bit tricky to separate the top from the can because of its snug fit. It is necessary to pry it off at the seam with either one's fingernails or a blade.
