Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and ChromeCustomer Review: Best can opener I"ve had in 50 years Summary: 5 Stars
My latest effort to open cans, after giving up on the cutting wheel in the goop, was the side cutting battery operated "One Touch" and a self crank one that also opened on the side. Finally after changing the batteries on the One Touch twice in one month, I said I was DONE.
Was very hopeful that this Hamilton Beach would finally answer all the problems. Very happy to say IT DOES!!!! Opens cans very easily. It even opened a slighly dented top. It does not stop when it has made one circle around. I noticed that if you continue letting it do its thing about a quarter turn more, the lid starts to turn off the can and I don't even have to pry the lid off the can. Hamilton Beach got it right. Why arn't all can openers make this way???
Customer Review: Great reviews but a bad product. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this can opener about 3 months ago based on an overwhelming number of positive reviews. The cord is so short that it had to be placed right next to an outlet. It opens about one out of every three cans, no matter how long I stand there holding the lever down and watching the can spin. For the few cans it opens, most of the time you have to use brute force and fingertips to get that lid off. I got metal splinters and cuts from the mess it makes on the edges. If you're in the habit of draining some cans like tuna and vegetables by holding the lid on and pouring the water out, forget it. You can't do that with this type of can opener. After the first month I packed it away and went back to my dependable old hand crank can opener.
Customer Review: Please Do Not Buy Summary: 1 Stars
I don't normally take the time to write a review but felt I had to with this one. After reading all the pros and cons (mostly pros), I placed my order. I liked the idea that the piece that cut the can did not touch the food to contaminate it.
Maybe I had a bad unit but it did not cut anything on more than 70% of the cans. Tuna - forget it. On the cans it did cut, the lid did not pop off easily. You had to get a sharp knife and try to pop the top off. I cut my hands more than once. It's a nice looking unit but that's about all I can say for it. I returned it and went to Target and bought an Oster which I love. I gave it one star because I think that is the lowest you can rate. Otherwise, I would rate 0 stars.
Customer Review: Won't open some cans. :( Also, no way to know when/if the process is complete. :( Summary: 3 Stars
We read the reviews and ordered this can opener to replace a standard type opener. Although we like it --- It is important to point out that this unit will not work on some cans. For example, its now near Thanksgiving and this opener won't open standard cans of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce!!! So we had to dig out the old opener and put it back on the counter to handle the cans that this unit can't handle.
Another negative is that with this opener must hold down the mechanism and are never quite sure when the can opener is finished cutting. There is no indication that the process is complete.
So if you decide to buy this unit make sure you keep another standard can opener handy nearby...
Customer Review: The Best Can Opener!!! Summary: 5 Stars
When our old (under the counter) can opener died a couple of weeks ago...I started looking for a replacement. My elderly mom lives with me and recently we notice that cans w/pop tops are being used more and more. However, they are difficult for my mom to open, especially the heavier cans. So...when I found this opener; which opens pop top cans, I had to try it, even though the reviews were mixed. I can tell you that it works like a charm, it does not look like a 'cheap' can opener (like many do). More important, my mom (who does most of the cooking) is extremely happy with it! For me, if it makes life a little easier for my 82 year old mom...then I've done my job and, in my opinion, so has Hamilton Beach!
