Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome

Customer Review: Became believer the hard way!
Summary: 5 Stars

After setting up the unit on the kitchen counter, we tried opening a can of beans. The can rotated half way round and nothing seemed to be happening. We tried it several more times and saw no action. I then decided to try the other end of the can. It went all the way round with no obvious cutting. Thoroughly disgusted, we got the shipping box to send it back! When I took the can off the opener, both ends fell away spilling beans all over - whoops! Turns out the unit cuts just below the lip on the can cylinder, not the top. The cut was very clean & smooth and, as mentioned in other reviews, did not have contents collected on the cutter or mechanism for possible spoiling/contamination later. In short, the unit works great but you have to understand how it does it - let it do its job.

After about one month use, it continues to operate fine. Great product!

Customer Review: I love this!

I asked for a safe edge can opener for Christmas after I opened my hand on a coffee can opened with a traditional opener. I ended up buying this Hamilton Beach to replace my Christmas gift. This Hamilton Beach opener is fantastic! I use it for pop-tops, regular cans, anything! It's very easy to use, takes up a reasonable amount of counter space and looks good. The opener holds the can securely and creates a smooth edge on both the top and the can - it locks the can in the opener until you release it. The top is the same diameter as the can when all is done so you can't stuff the top in when you recycle.

2/23/09 - the only problem after a month+ is when opening a very large can, specifically a 39oz. coffee can. I had to go around a couple times. It did still work - just pressed the bottom of the can toward the opener a little to help it along.

Customer Review: Great product!

I decided to check an electric can opener online since we'd been using a hand-held
one for at least five years. The different electric can openers drove me CRAZY when the cans quit opening and we decided to open cans by hand until the computer JUMPED OUT at me and the dear Lord brought me to your Hamilton Beach 76606 electric can opener and I saw it with my own eyes! Since I started using it, I was just amazed on how it opened the cans when I didn't believe it would work. The first time, I was confused as to how it worked and I didn't think the can opened. But once I realized how very easy it was to cut open the cans, I was thrilled! It's so great at how the can is opened with no sharp edges. I did have to hold the can as it opened, but as how I had to deal with my manual can opener, this was heaven! I am sure that we will enjoy it for years to come!

Customer Review: We have a winner!

Wow, I don't usually get excited about can openers, but this one really works well. Opens every can I've tried. Pop tops no problem. Standard can, big and small, no problem. No sharp edges, and get this, if you just keep the lever down, let it go past the starting point, you will see the can turning and the top staying in place. So you know for sure the top is now separate from the can. Makes it a snap to get off. Looks nice too. Black and chrome, which is the theme for our kitcen. So we love it.

We've only had it a month, so lets see how long term goes, but so far, it's is 5 stars.

UPDATE: Okay, it's been almost a year, and .. well it doesn't work as well as when we got it. Some cans it just will not open anymore. Those with the very thick rims. I'm going to try to reach HB and see what they say. Knocking 1 star off for now.

Customer Review: O.K. while it lasted
Summary: 3 Stars

Like many others, I have had a hard time over the years finding a can opener to last. I had a manual one that seemed to last 20 years, but upon purchasing another it only seemed to last a few months. So, I decided to try an electric can opener (thinking they last longer). This model was great for a year,(just beyond warranty) then stopped opening cans. There are no replacement parts, and when I was about to get another one of this model, read several reviews that said the same thing. I decided to bite the bullet and get an expensive Cuisinart, and we'll see how long that lasts.. One other thing to mention on this Hamilton Beach model is, that while it is nice that it doesn't leave sharp edges (it either cuts, or seems to "unglue" cans from around the rim) you can't use the lid to strain things (like tuna) because the lid doesn't cut from the inside.
