Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and ChromeCustomer Review: Until the Hamilton-Beach Pop-Top, I hated electric can openers (5- stars) Summary: 5 Stars
For years, I used manual can openers because I could never keep the blades of electrics clean enough; the beauty of this one is that the blade cuts around the can, on the outside, leaving the can without sharp edges and the blade without food on it. It can open any size can (obviously, within reason!) without mess.
Operation is simple. You lift the arm (to unlock it from safety mode), place the can under the guide, and hold down the arm until the sound changes. Remove the can -- it will have a crimped looking edge all the way around. You simply left the lid off the can. Again, because it cuts around the side of the can, it leaves no sharp edges. The principle is the same as OneTouch Can Opener, but with a sturdier body designed for countertops and electric power rather than batteries.
The photo of this product makes it look -- at least, to me -- as though it has a fold-out base. Not so. This is a solid, sturdy opener with a small open area at the bottom. The unit locks for safety by pushing the bar down. Other than that, this is a pretty simple opener, with no fancy additions. With the handle down, it measures 9" high and 4.5 " wide.
I took away a half a star from the rating because it doesn't open the top of a particular brand of coconut milk; however, it opens the bottom of the same can without issue. All other brands and sizes work perfectly.
I highly recommend this opener or the OneTouch listed above, for their side-cutting designs. I rate this model slightly higher (I have both now) because it uses electric current, and therefore doesn't eat through batteries, and because it seems like it will last longer. However, if you don't have counter- or cupboard-space, you might want to consider the OneTouch.

Customer Review: Excellent Product Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this can opener for a couple months now and it's great. Prior to this I have had one of the battery powered side opening can openers ($20#. Didn't matter what I tryied for batteries #Alkaline, Rechargables, etc# they would open 1 or 2 cans and then die, usually in the middle of a can, leaving the opener stuck on a can. Tomato sauce cans were the worst, it could never seem to cut the lid completely off.
Also had several of the old fashioned hand openers ranging from $5 - $12. They worked for a month or two, then got so dull it was too hard to turn. Plus, they leave sharp edges on the lid that you often have to fish out of the can. #Just think how many people handled it before you, perhaps without washing their hands.#
Since I got this one it has never failed to open a can. One feature that is both a plus and minus is that you have to hold the handle down. On the minus side is that you can go do something else like you could with the automatic type. But the plus side is that you can hold it until the can is really open, not when it thinks it is. Some can's have to make 2 rotations to cut through the heavy side seam. #Oddly though, the previously problematic tomato sauce cans are the easiest to open with this one. One rotation is usually enough) It's easy to tell when the can is open, the lid turns without the can.
It opens the can without leaving a really sharp edge. You could cut yourself on it if you try, but there isn't that razor sharp edge as when opening the top. The lid stays on top of the can until you lift it off instead of falling in.
Too soon to know how long it's going to last, but from past experiance with Hamilton Beach, it should be quite a while.
Customer Review: The best can opener - look no further, just buy it! Summary: 5 Stars
My mother had been using a broken electric can opener for years, so I finally decided she had to have a new one. Now I want to get one for myself, even though I don't need one right now!
I bought this based on its stellar user reviews, and everyone is correct - this is the best can opener I've ever seen! Incredibly easy to use, never seems to get dirty (she's had it for over a month and she's opened LOTS of cans in that time), and it always cuts clean with NO jagged edges or metal fragments. It cuts the side of the can, just above the level of the can contents, so the blade doesn't touch the contents. The can and its top are left with no sharp edges, and the top can be put right back on the can, giving you the option of storing leftover contents right in the can itself. Mom prefers to store her leftovers in other containers, but it's nice that she has the option of just storing the whole can in the fridge if she's in a hurry.
This can opener does not have a knife sharpener like most ordinary can openers do, but it does have a scissors holder, which my mother finds much more useful. She never used the knife sharpener on her old can opener, but she was always searching for her misplaced kitchen scissors. Now she has an absolutely fabulous can opener, plus she can always find her scissors. She also likes its retractable power cord.
This can opener is a superior design at an ordinary price - just buy it!
Customer Review: Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy! Summary: 5 Stars
This is, without a doubt, the best electric can opener I've ever owned. My old Rival can opener gave up the ghost after almost 30 years of regular use. I researched can openers here on Amazon and decided to purchase a Proctor Silex Plus 76370P Extra-Tall Can Opener, White. You can see my review there to get an idea of how disappointed I was with that can opener -- it's now in my "yard sale" pile. I came back to Amazon and found this Hamilton Beach and got it at a great price (less than twenty bucks) by purchasing an "open box" item.
From the first time I used it I've been delighted with how it performs. One feature I really like is that it can open pop-top cans. One irritation I've always had with pop-top cans is that it is difficult to get all of the food out of the can because some of it gets caught under the lip that is left when the top is popped. This is especially true with condensed soups and other foods (like jellied cranberry sauce) that could slide out in one piece if it weren't for that lip. With this opener I can now open the cans completely with no lip to trap the contents of the can.
I'm glad I'm so pleased with this product. I'm in my 60's now and, if this can opener lasts as long as my old Rival, this could very well be the last can opener I ever buy! :-)
Customer Review: Limited effectiveness Summary: 3 Stars
I've been using this Hamilton Beach can opener for over three months now, and I'm about ready to set it aside and return to my Cuisinart SCO-60. The Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch represents good intentions, but an inability to open all types of cans. Tab-top cans, such as soups, coffee, and single-serve foods frequently are not openable. I have had difficulty cutting off the lids of grocery store brands of canned vegetables. Sometimes the lid never is completely severed from the can body. I am also disappointed that there is no magnet or other device to lift the lids which do get cut loose. They must be pried loose from the can, using a sharp object of some kind. When this can opener works as advertised, it keeps the lid from falling into the can, and the lid is easily removed just by grasping it tightly with your fingers. More often than not, to completely cut the lid off, you must hold down the handle of the opener for two or three trips around the top of the can. Even then, you can't know for sure if the lid has been completely severed. On the positive side, the design of this Hamilton Beach is unique, and it is not at all difficult to grasp the can and press down the handle while it tries to do its job. It is also not at all difficult to keep clean. I just wish it was more successful in opening the wide variety of cans being used today.
