Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 68010 Snowman Ice ShaverCustomer Review: Great when used correctly, makes perfect consistency ice Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this unit for 5 days now and I've been making shaved ice for myself and the rest of the family every day. The kids love it! This machine works relatively fast and produces shaved ice with the consistency of icy snow chips just like how shaved ice should be--not too fluffy like you're eating snow puffs and not too rocky like the ice kernels you find in snow cones sold at carnivals and fairs. I've been using the provided molds, and each mold shaves in about a minute and makes 2 cups of (uncompacted) shaved ice. This is enough for 2 people.
The mechanics of the actual machine takes a little getting used to, and that's probably why some reviewers gave this product 1-star reviews, because they probably didn't figure out how to use this machine properly. The machine consists of 3 parts. The motor head with a metal plate (that pushes and rotates the ice), the cup with the blade (that holds and shaves the ice), and the stand (that holds the cup and the motor underneath of which you put your bowl or cup to catch the shaved ice). The machine shaves the ice by pushing the round ice block down towards the blade and at the same time rotates it to shave ice off like a mechanical pencil sharpener shaves wood off of pencils. Because of how this machine works, if the metal plate in the motor does not make contact or if the ice does not rotate, the machine will not work properly.
I found that ice cylinders made from the provided plastic molds work well. The molded ice is even and rounded so the motor will stay leveled. Even with the 2 provided molds, you'll have enough ice to shave if you make molded ice blocks ahead of time by putting already frozen blocks in a freezer bag while making more in the mold. You can also use the round plastic containers that are given out with Chinese takeout. Ice cubes, however, do not work as well because they do not make even contact with the blade on the bottom of the cup. A trick you can do is to let the ice sit in the cup for a few minutes so it melts a little and sticks to the blade and the metal plate on the motor head. Whatever form of ice you use, just make sure to not fill the cup on the machine to be higher than 2.5 inches or the motor will not "catch" the switch and it will not turn on.
So far I have shaved mostly plain ice and I found that it is more convenient than shaving flavored ice in terms of cleaning up afterwards. Since it's just water, cleaning the machine is a breeze. All I have to do is wipe up the excess water and leave the machine out to dry--no rinsing required and no need to deal with cleaning the blade and risk cutting yourself. As for the blade, you can only cut yourself from the inside of the ice compartment when cleaning it because the blade is tilted inwards. Because the sharp part of the blade is not oriented outside the cup, I think it's perfectly safe for children (who have experience helping in the kitchen or know not to mess around) to operate this machine. The other reviewer who gave this machine a bad review because of the blade overreacted. For flavoring the plain ice, I like to top it with sweetened condensed milk, matcha (green tea) powder, and canned mixed fruit for a Taiwanese style dessert. Do try the condensed milk, it's yummy! Adding chopped fresh fruit or fruit syrups (like Monin syrups) also makes very delicious treats.
So bottom line, this machine is not 100% automatic and requires you to push on it to operate it (don't expect it to churn out shaved with one press of a button), however, for only $30, a little effort, and a wait time of less than a minute, this machine does exactly I want and I think it is well worth the money!
Edit: I forgot to mention this machine isn't as loud as you would expect. It's quieter than a food processor.
Description of Hamilton Beach 68010 Snowman Ice ShaverMake frozen treats for adults or kids with an ice shaver that uses ice cubes or special molds On hot summer days nothing beats a scoop of snow--to eat! This delightful Snowman churns out bowlfuls of shaved ice in just seconds. Kids can slurp flavored sno-cones for a birthday party and adults can sip frozen daiquiris for evenings on the deck. Two 4-inch round plastic molds with lids are included for freezing water, syrup-flavored water, or fruit juices. Simply place the frozen round (regular ice cubes will work, too, but not as well) in the blade unit, cover with the motorized top, and press down on the palm-size operating button. A bowl placed underneath (not included) catches the instant snow. For safety the sharp blade is completely internal and not accessible to fingers when the Snowman is operating. The machine measures 13 inches high when assembled, with an 8-inch-square base. A one-year warranty covers the Snowman against defects. --Ann Bieri
