Hamilton Beach 40886 1.7 Quart Cordless Concealed Element Kettle, Stainless Steel
I purchased this kettle two years. We use it everyday to heat water for use in instant coffee and to pour over tea bags for iced tea. If you accidentally overfill it a little more than it should be, it will blow hot water from the spout and will get all over anything sitting nearby, then you have a mess to clean up! However, no fault with the pot, just the operator...? It has never given off any sort of aftertaste. I have have discovered that scale will build up in this kettle or any sort of container, that is used to boil tap water, and will leave scale sediments in bottom of pot. All water heating containers will do this because as the water evaporates it produces pure steam and leaves the calcium, scale, and other sediments in bottom of pot, which can be hard to remove. It requires a good treatment of vinegar, or other scale/lime remover. If left in bottom of kettle, it definitely will cause the coffee or tea to have an off-taste, which is undesirable. From years and years of experience with "coffee water" the only way to prevent any scale buildup and bad taste, is to purchase a reverse/osmosis water filtration system. It will fit under the sink, and will dispense the calcium/lime/chlorine free water through a small, separate faucet mounted to top of sink. You can also purchase a new R/O system that will have a monitor attached that will light a small red lamp under the handle, when its time to service the system. With this arrangement, your worries will be over. The water actually passes through 4 or 5 individual filters, with the last one being a charcoal filter. Another great feature about the R/O system is that you will have clean, fresh, calcium and chlorine free, water that is just a fraction of the cost of buying the gallon jugs of water which is stored in "plastic" containers. We would not be without one of the R/O systems. The filter that usually needs replacing most often, is the charcoal or final filter. The charcoal filter should be replaced whenever test strip test or electronic tester shows increases in chlorine above defined levels. Available online also, is an electronic chlorine tester. I have found them to be very dependable and accurate. Depending on how much water you consume from the system, eventually you will also need to replace the R/O membrane, which is the main filter, that gets automatically back washed by the R/O system. I have had my R/O system in use for four years and use water everyday for our coffee, cold tea, drinking water, dispenser in refrigerator door & ice-maker. All of our drinking water gets filtered. There are lots of sellers on amazon that sells them. They are not very difficult to install under the sink. You will need a water connection under the sink, and a drain line connected to the sink drain. All of these requirements are already close by. The installer can go to one of the major home stores and get the fittings necessary to connect the R/O system. Once you get this system installed, you will never again want to be without it. It depends if you want coffee or just great tasting coffee. Honestly, make a cup of coffee or tea from regular tap water, then make the same with the Reverse/Osmosis system water and compare the difference. You will be buying one after the taste test....LOL Just check on internet there are lots of them for sale on line. They are all pretty much built the same, just as long as each system has the same exact type (not necessarily the brand) filters. These systems also can be purchased at Costco and Sam's Club. Lowe's and Home Depot. I know this comment is a little off target review subject, however if anyone does purchase one of the R/O units, connect the water to your ice maker, and have nice clear, odor free ice cubes. This is a nice side benefit also.
UPDATE: 1-30-2011 On this "Hot Water Kettle" Two weeks ago, we went to use it, as we do everyday of the year, and it make a loud electrical "pop" noise. It appeared to come from the bottom of the pot. After that, it never heated water again. Had to go buy another Kettle, very similar to this one.
Description of Hamilton Beach 40886 Stainless Steel Electric Cordless KettleThe Hamilton Beach Stainless Steel kettle is a beautiful and functional appliance for the kitchen. The 1500 watts brings water to a boil rapidly. The cordless feature allows you to take hot water to the table safely. The autoshutoff feature helps eliminate hazard. This electric kettle heats up to 1.7 liters of water for coffee, tea, or instant soup without requiring the use of a stove. The round plastic base plugs into any standard outlet and gets water boiling in no time with its 1,500 watts of power. When water has boiled, a safety mechanism turns the unit off and prevents the kettle from boiling dry. For easy lifting and serving, the kettle rotates 360 degrees on the base and travels cord-free from counter to table for pouring. While the kettle's brushed stainless-steel exterior gets very hot during boiling, the plastic handle and knob on the removable lid safeguard against burns by staying cool. A drip-free spout keeps water from splashing and scalding and an anti-scale mesh filter traps lime and calcium particles (found in hard water) before they end up in a teacup. A clear water-level window conveniently shows how much water is left in the kettle. For long-term performance, the kettle's heating element is concealed, which keeps mineral deposits to a minimum and makes cleaning easier. Hamilton Beach warrants this product for two years from the date of purchase. --Cristina Vaamonde
