Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 33967 Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker

Customer Review: Nearly perfect crockpot - very good purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

Although I grew up in the 70s and 80s with my mother's less-than-exciting crockpot creations, I decided to give the old crock pot thing a try this spring. Working full time, while pregnant and with a toddler at home, I just didn't have the time or energy to make proper meals -- and I just couldn't bring myself to buy salt and preservative-laden prepared foods at the store.

So, after much research, I determined that this model was the best one out there. It's reviews are higher than those for other models by fancier brands and it cost about a third of most of the competition.

I am entirely thrilled with my purchase. The only drawback I have found after using it to prepare 5 different meals is that the 'low' setting is still pretty hot. If you are like me and use predominantly grass-fed beef, then you might find that you have to reduce your cooking time to prevent the leaner meat from drying out.

That said, I have made amazing filling for chicken burritos, a modified beef bourgignon (how do you spell that anyway), beef stroganoff, old fashioned pot roast, and what I call 'sausage fest' (assorted uncured brats and kielbasa stewed with sauerkraut, carrots, onions and apples.

This has been a huge time saver for my family and is probably the best $45 I have ever spent.

Customer Review: I hate this cooker!
Summary: 1 Stars

I am a believer in the use of digital controls for things, and slow cookers too if it works nice. The only way this would benefit a person is if it truly makes ones life simpler in some respect. This slow cooker is a joke, I can't set the desired temparature using the probe for a longer time of my choosing. It simply just switches to warm after my roast reaches my selected temp of 145 degrees, but then, my potatoes, carrots, and onions need to cook longer and that isn't happening on the units preset drop down temp setting of warm. Maybe it is my desire to have it stay at 145 degrees for say 5 or 6 hours, that would be nice. I like having control of the time and max temparature of my choosing. Didn't these dopes figure that people want a (REAL) digital controling features on their appliances. Nothing like phony and useless electronics! I'm taking it back after today. I discovered one thing good, if you want to call it a good feature, the hole in the lid is good for a regular meat thermometer so you can see that the low temp setting is close to 145 to 150 degrees. WHAT JUNK! Oh and, these people on here are a bunch of phonies writing phony good reviews, to get people to buy this glorified piece of crap!

Customer Review: Very Pleased
Summary: 5 Stars

Before I purchased this Hamilton Beach Crock Pot Set & Forget, I read the consumer report and this Amazon reviews and am comfortable with it despite of some reviews that they stated they started the slow cooker only to come back home to find the foods are still cold after 8 hours! It is either the defective product or the user does not read the manual correctly? I choose the latter that it may be the user's error that they set the program incorrectely. So far, I have used the slow cooker about 5 times and came home from work smelling good. I really like the feature that it stays warm after done cooking. The manual instructions can be a little confusion but if you read it carefully then you would not have any problem with it. The only draw back is the 6-quart is much too big for one person and wishes they have 3 to 4 quart programmable slow cooker. It is also much too heavy for the eldery people to handle it, so I would not recommend for the eldery people to purchase this product. Overall, I am happy that I purchased this product from Amazon. The price is lower here than if you buy it from the retail store.Hamilton Beach 33967 Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker

Customer Review: So I am not alone...
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this slow cooker elsewhere, at a really great deal (mispriced by the retailer) of $26.00. You know what they say about too good to be true right? I had the slow cooker for almost 18 months, a few times the cooker appeared to have shut itself off. I couldn't be sure that the power hadn't just flickered- causing it to turn off, and always caught it before the food had an opportunity to get cold or spoil. Like other reviewers here, I thought that it was just a fluke, and continued to use it other times with much success. This morning I put a roast on to cook. I came home for lunch and the program had 2 1/2 hrs left to cook, after which it would automatically switch to the warm feature for up to 4hrs. Imagine my surprise when I got home 4 1/2 hrs later and it was just completely shut off. I have messed with this slow cooker for the last time. I can't risk poisoning my family with under-cooked food and groceries are too expensive to just waste this way. Hamilton Beach- you are a good company with a reputable history. I would suggest looking into the malfunction in this product before you lose the following that you have worked so hard to build up. While I won't boycott the company altogether, I will be purchasing a Rival Crock-Pot to replace this one.

Customer Review: Best Slow-Cooker I've owned!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this slow-cooker! It is nice and roomy, so if you are looking for a cooker that can accommodate alot of food, this is the one!

I like that there are several temperature settings, a timer, is programmable and has a temperature probe. I've made everything from barbecued pork to chili to rice dishes and bread in this and everything has turned out perfectly.

It had a nice look to it with the black and silver. I am not ashamed to leave it sitting out on my black granite counter, as it looks like it is part of the decor.

The lid is interesting. It has clips that you can leverage to hold the lid on, I suppose if you were going to take it somewhere and didn't want it to spill in the car. I think it also helps when making rice and bread in adding a steam factor. They were a little tricky to get used to at first but now I view it as an added feature and wouldn't have it any other way.

The price for the size and quality(this is built very solidly and has nice, easy-to-use digital controls) is excellent. After comparison shopping, I don't think I could have done better. Cleans up easily, the inner crock goes right in the dishwasher. I highly recommend, especially if you do alot of slow-cooking.
