Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 33967 Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow CookerCustomer Review: Great cooker over-all, a bargain for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I've had my slow cooker for 2 months now and have used it at least once a week - I love it!!!! Everything I've made in it (ribs, chili, pot roast, soup) has come out wonderfull and these are all dishes I would never otherwise make if I had to stand over a stove for hours. The programming is very easy to do, and both the manual and timer options work great. I haven't really used the probe, I don't really see the need for it. I do, however, have two small gripes with this product. First, there is a certain rubber smell that I noticed during the cooking process, if you open the lid. But it never seeps into the food itself, so I'm not really worried about it - it basically smells like new rubber, and I think it will probably fade with time. The second gripe is that if you pack the cooker almost full and start cooking on the low setting, it never really reaches a hot temperature. I set a roast for 4 hours on low, only to realize that the meat was basically still cold at the end of the 4th hour. It's as if the cooker can't handle the large amount of food at such a low setting. To solve think, I always start cooking on high for at least an hour, allow it to heat up to a high enough temperate, and then switch it to low for the remainer of the cooking time. This has worked out great for me, so it's not really a big problem. Overall, I highly recommend this cooker for the money, it's a great deal.
Customer Review: Well worth the money and a great piece of equipment! Summary: 5 Stars
I had an OLD crcokpot that I had gotten probably 10-15 yrs ago with the low/high setting. It worked well and I did like it. My only issue was I wanted something that I could program and really control the temperature more. This one fit the bill perfectly.
I hunted around, and based on reviews and the description in general, this was the best one. I don't really see any of the issues some others had. I did notice that the low setting was pretty hot, but it stands to reason that if something is on simmer or warm on the stove it's going to bubble after a time; this item is no differnet. I also LOVE the warm-setting! That probably is the TRUE low setting. But, either way, it's a great item and I have used it at least 2-3 times a week since I got it. Even purchased one for my mom for Christmas. It would make a fantastic wedding present, bday gift, housewarming gift, etc...
The meat probe and timing feature are truly wonderful. It's nice to know I can put something in the pot before work and come home to have a nice, homemade, hot meal. The 'keep warm' feature is fantastic! No reheating!
If you are looking for a classy looking piece of functional equipement; something that has a meat-probe, timer, a inner pot that is removeable, a clear see through lid; even comes with a spoon, this IS the item for you!
Happy cooking!! =0)
Customer Review: Amazing--Can be Fancy or Simple Summary: 5 Stars
This is a terrific crock pot! It has a very high quality feel to it. It feel substantial and every little detail is well thought out. The clamps to hold the lid on are perfect for transporting to a party. The temperature probe is great for making sure meat is done. Everything really has been thought of, even the clip on spoon. Trust me, that's much more useful than you'd think when you get to a party and need a serving utensil.
Here's the best thing about this product that I wish I'd known before buying--it can be fancy or it can be simple. My husband is into electronics and likes all of the bells and whistles. You can do just about anything with this crock pot. You can set it to bring your food to a certain temperature with the temperature probe. You can use program mode to cook a certain amount of time and then have it keep warm until you finally get home from work. The keep warm feature is great! I find it very useful for parties where people are coming early and others are coming later. BUT, I'm a mostly simple person. I worried this crock pot would be too high tech for me. Rest assured. It's not. If you're a low tech person or like cooking 'old school' you can just hit the manual button and use it the way you've always used a crock pot before, just pick low or high. Even my mom who hates technology has no problem using it.
Customer Review: The search is over!!! Summary: 5 Stars
For over 5 years I've been trying to find a programmable slow cooker... without spending a ton of dough! I am pretty loyal to the original brand of slow cookers (hint hint) but after reading all the reviews on how that brand often overcooks the food, I decided to give this one a try. I'm so glad I did!
I wasn't too sure about the probe feature and the little hole in the lid... if I wasn't using the probe, would the liquid evaporate and dry out the meal?!? The answer is no! I've made some great dishes in this slow cooker, even my Thanksgiving turkey (7-lb breast) turned out great. The biggest challenge is finally upgrading to a large size from 3.5 quart. The programming features are fantastic... just make sure you keep the little booklet that comes with it nearby - I keep mine under the aluminum foil box in the drawer under where I typically plug in my machine - because it's hard to remember all the meat temperatures, sometimes.
I like that this is an oval crock pot. I saw a recipe for corn on the cob in the crock pot, and I'm sure the cobs will fit just fine. I am also excited about using this slow cooker to take places. The locking lid and the gasket around the glass lid are sure to help the contents stay put during transit. In addition, the locking feature keeps little (and sometimes big) hands from opening the lid ;)
Customer Review: Hot Surface Surprise Summary: 2 Stars
This unit looked great online. Lots of features, electronic front panel, timer, temperature probe and removable insides for easy cleaning. A Christmas present for my wife, she was very pleased when she opened it Christmas morning. A few days later she tried it out and imagine the surprise when an hour after turning it on, she reached to push the unit back a few inches from the edge of the counter and burned her hand -- badly -- on the outside surface of the unit.
Hey -- a crockpot should cook things on the INSIDE -- NOT on the OUTSIDE. What brainchild monster idiot came up with the idea to put what amounts to a burner on the freaking outside surface of this otherwise handsome crockpot. How much do you want to bet this thing will be recalled and pulled from the market within a few months.
Yes, there is a little small print caution message decal on there, but its not promenent -- and certainly did not show up in the online picture or literature for the product. Even if you grant Hamilton Beach that the decal is there, the energy expended to heat up the outside surface of this unit cannot be efficient -- hey drape some cuts of roast over the outside and get your energy dollar's worth perhaps was the thinking.
My bandaged wife and I do not recommend this unit for anyone who has nerve endings.
