Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 33967 Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow CookerCustomer Review: Digital display died after 30 minutes - it was too big anyway. Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this slow cooker but had the unfortunate experience of having the display fizzle out 30 minutes after I'd loaded it. Realizing it might be too big for my every day needs, (I try to prepare 6 or 7 servings each night so we have leftovers for lunch.) I elected to exchange it for the Hamilton Beach 33956 Set 'n Forget 5-Quart Slow Cooker, White. I assume I just got a "dud" as I quite like the 5 quart unit. Since the two are the same aside from size and finish, I'll add my comments pertaining to function here as well:
"As a programmable slow cooker, it does offer some options for temperature control but nothing revolutionary. It offers "high" and "low" temperature timed routines that automatically switch to "warm" after your selected cooking period. You can also operate the unit manually. For those who want to be able to put the ingredients in the machine in the morning and have a cooked meal 8 or 9 hours later, this machine will perform well if you use recipes that call for long term cooking under lower heat conditions (chili, pot roast, etc...). If you throw a raw bird in there at 7 AM, don't expect it to be succulent at 6 PM. It does not have a delay start. I have not yet had the opportunity to use the temperature probe. As it was not a critical factor in making my buying decision, it remains a low priority for me. I will update this review at a later time if I have more to add. "
Customer Review: Just What We Needed Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this about two weeks ago and have used it five times already. Having used crock pots for years, what we wanted was one with selectable heat level and a variable digital timer - this fits the bill, and more. It works very well. It heats up reasonably quickly without getting too hot. Once it is at the selected heat level, the display flashes between heat setting and time remaining. After your selected time is over, the unit shifts to Warm and stays there for fourteen hours. We haven't tried the fourteen-hour setting, but we have set the crock pot and left for the day. Upon returning, the unit was on warm and everything inside was perfect (did I mention that my wife is a terrific cook!)
As an engineer, I especially like that the handle is wide and is attached to the top in three separate places. This spreads the stress on the glass; thus, there is far less chance of breaking the top. That's important as the top is glass and, while strong, isn't bulletproof. We saw quite a few glass tops that just had a small knob in the middle of the glass top. Not a great idea.
The unit has built-in latches that clamp the top on. We have not used them on this unit; however our other crock pot is also a Hamilton Beach and also has the latches. They work well if you are moving the whole unit when it is full of food.
We have not used the sensor yet, although I'm planning a meal so I can try it out. I'll update this review when I do.
Customer Review: Really Pleased Summary: 5 Stars
We received a gift card from relatives for the holidays because we've been wanting a slow cooker forever. I researched on Consumer Reports, some of the cooking sites, and Amazon and decided (also based on customer reviews) that based on all of the recommendations about the best features, the features to avoid, the issues people of had with other slow cookers, that this was the one to get. We've never owned a slow cooker before but after receiving it (they packed it so it arrived in excellent condition), we washed it, read the instruction booklet, found a great recipe for chili online, and made our first slow cooker meal at home. Not only was it easy, economical, and really delicious, I loved the smell in the house while the chili cooked. It made an excellent chili (and we've since cooked other meals in it). We were a tad concerned with getting such a large slow cooker since we are a family of two, but it's not an issue. If we don't choose to eat seconds, we simply pack up leftovers for the fridge and have them for lunch or dinner the next day. We look forward to using it for get-togethers and know its size will be handy, then. The instructions that come with it allow for users to infer, from them, how to cook different dishes (i.e. how to determine heating setting, time settings, manual or auto cook, etc. for anything you find a recipe for). My husband is a tough judge of appliances and he and I both really like this slow cooker. We're glad that we got it.
Customer Review: REALLY BAD sickening SMELL Summary: 2 Stars
Bought this a few weeks ago after much reading and stressing over getting something that once again was junk. Everything looked great upon arriving so I washed it up and put in a roast and veggies. Cooked it all day on low. Roast was great and it worked fine on manual, low heat...After the meal I cleaned up and put the crock and lid in the sink to soak a little before washing. Only smell I noticed was the roast and veggies at the time. Next morning I washed everything up good and put it back together. I started noticing everytime I went into the kitchen or walked by the pot I smelled this nasty odor, I checked and sure enough it was the crock pot lid. I immediately put it in the sink with alot of vinegar and water, left it there for 2 days! The smell is still there! I kept the lid upside down on the pot so as to let any odors dissapate...didn"t happen...I rubbed the gasket several times with a lemon and left it sit overnite...did not help. I currently have the crock cooking on high with lemons and vinegar in water and am immersing the lid one side at a time to "cook" the rubber gasket in the lemon, vinegar water. If this does not work it is going back. The smell makes me sick everytime I go by. It smells like onions and rubber mixed...I really liked the pot and do not understand why you cannot seem to buy a product worth using anymore.I should not have to go thru all this hassle just to use the pot.. I guess the Chinese are laughing at us all the way to the bank!
Customer Review: Good product and good service Summary: 4 Stars
I am from Malaysia. This is the first time I bought electronic good from Amazon. The down side is you need to pay more for shipping (Amazon only provide Expedited Shipping service for international buyer).
I bought this product in last January and it only took them less than one week to deliver.
Maybe is my bad luck the product come with a defect and I make a complain to Amazon. As I worry about the shipping fees to deliver the item back to Amazon, Amazon reply me within a day and told me no need to worry about to return back the defect unit and they will send a new one for me.
What a relief.
So far the slow cooker work as it promise.
I personaly feel that when you programme it as "high" it will cook your dishes fast and the tempreture is too high. It suitable for those people in a hurry. While I will prefer "low" mode. There is little water evaporate during cooking. So you no need to put too much water compare with the other slow cooker I used.
I haven't used the probe, hope to try it soon.
The only down side of the product is when you program the cooker to "high" and want to change the program to "low" mode you need to press "off" and set again.
Again for international buyer, no need to worry about return item and feedback from Amazon. These guys really take care of you well and you will have a peace of mind doing shopping in Amazon.
