Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 33967 Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker

Customer Review: Great features, challenged digital readout
Summary: 4 Stars

I had never been a slow cooker cook but was desperate to find ways to get a healthy, home cooked meal on the table for my family quicker after a long day at work. With a few slow cooker cookbooks I have been able to do that with this product, with some advance planning (chopping things up at night) and a little prep time in the morning. I love the warming feature that kicks on automatically after you've reached your cooking time.

Unfortunately, about 7 months after I purchased the unit, one of the four numbers on the digital readout went blank (the space for 0-9 hours), meaning I could not be sure if I had set the timer for 1 hour or 6. I think if any other number in the digital readout had gone bad, i could have suffered through, but the hour readout? makes this machine unreliable.

Happily I called Hamilton Beach and they are sending me a new one for just the cost of the shipping ($12.50). Should be free, but oh well. I'd rather have a product that works.

Customer Review: Overall: excellent slow cooker
Summary: 5 Stars

The Hamilton Beach 33967 Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker is fantastic; I wanted a slow cooker that would automatically stop cooking when I wanted it to, so I didn't have to plan on being home when the cook time finished. The programmable time feature is very helpful, and it turns on warm automatically when the cooking is finished so that I have my warm meal when I get home automatically.

Pros:
- Programmable, can set low or high temperatures for a set period of time, or even use a built-in thermometer probe
- Has latches that allow you to secure the lid to the slow cooker unit, so you can transport the entire cooker with food for a potluck or other event
- Large 6-quart capacity is fantastic for making large meals at once

Cons:
- Slow cookers should be filled halfway at least, so this cooker is not necessarily suitable for making smaller meals
- Cord is very short, so must be placed within a foot or so of an outlet

Customer Review: Keeps cutting off
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this Hamilton Beach Serve and Go Crock pot a couple years ago and I am getting so frustrated with it. I will set it for 8 hours before I go to bed at 12 midnight. When I get up - it is "OFF" And the meat is raw. So I will re-set it for another 8 hours to cook all day - to have for supper instead of lunch. It cooks about 1 - 2 hours - then cuts off. Sometimes it will run the entire 8 hours - then flip to warm. So I NEVER KNOW when using it if it will stay on or not. So I'm starting to learn - you can't set it and forget it. YOU better check on it every hour - on the hour to make sure it is still on. Which is NOT what I bought a crock pot for. I bought it to cook over night - OR while I'm away all day shopping and have meals ready when I get home. I don't use it a lot - and I thought maybe the couple times over the last 2 years was something odd going on. Now I know it is just a usual thing with this pot.

Customer Review: Funny Smell and Bad Aftertaste
Summary: 1 Stars

My wife used the crock-pot twice. During this time, we noticed a funky smell transferred to the food from the crock-pot liner. In addition to smelling bad, my wife's fine cuisine (twice) both had a bad aftertaste. Now, at first... I might have written it off to my wife's cooking; however, I've been around the block a few times and I'm telling you the liner of the crock-pot is the culprit. To see if anyone else has had a similar problem, I googled my concern. Sure enough, there were plenty of people that have had similar experiences with their crock-pot.
On a final note: I've eaten from crock-pots before, and I'm not ready to write them off. I believe it's either the process the manufacture used to cure the pot including the coating [or sealer]. After my wife cooked a second roast, i put my nose up to the pot liner... Yup! It's the liner. Darn. I will purchase another crock-pot; however, I will go to a department store to compare other products up close.

Customer Review: This ones the greatest

Hamilton Beach 33967 Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker with probe
This is the best slow cooker that I have used in 50 years of married house keeping; I was so happy with the first that I purchased a 2nd one and keep both on the counter for easy access and constant use. I do love the probe feature having used it on everything from Rock cornish hens to a lovely med. rare beef roast, I have Never been disapointed. I do set the probe tempeture at least 8-10 degrees under preferred cooking temp to allow the meat or fowl to set on warm to absorb the juices before slicing.
I am so completely satisfied with this cooker that I sent one to my daughter who lives in AK. I do wish that the instruction booklet was expanded to include more recipes, there are so many functions that this cooker can do to make your "kitchen life" easier.
