Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Hamilton Beach 22708 Toastation 2-Slice Toaster and Mini Oven, BlackCustomer Review: Wise choice for single or senior Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered this from Amazon, free shipping and have enjoyed it almost a year. Toaster is perfect for long or wide bread, rye, multi grain, sour dough. Good healthy bread that never fit in a regular cheap toaster. Whole loaves I slice thick for the toaster. English muffins I do face up buttered in the oven part, take out the tray and put them on the rack with your eye on it, no timer.
The oven isn't really meant for baking as some complain here, it is small, but for snacks, or adjunct to a dinner, perfect for one or two people. Only improvement they could make is deeper, my frozen small Celeste pizzas didn't fit, but I soon learned to simply snap them in half when frozen, like a big cookie, and lay 2 sides lengthwise. I soon moved up to bigger pizzas with lots of goodies, frozen just break off a portion for one and put the rest back in freezer. Ummmm, 4 minutes. Forget trying to cut frozen with knife or pizza cutter, just break. On the open rack for crisp crust, on the metal tray for soft crust at 400deg, half the time suggested on the package directions because it is so close to the heating elements and heats fast.
I use a lot of frozen ready to brown and serve, French Fries, onion rings, Hot Pockets (which get soggy in microwave)fishsticks, or my toasted cheese sandwiches which can make a mess in my Foreman grill. Do one side on tray and turn it over. I do meat in George in 4 minutes, never meat in a toaster oven, had bad experiences with splattered grease and fire in other toaster ovens. Use your range broiler for meat. This is primarily for snacks and single portions you miss if you only had a popup toaster.
With my small studio "kitchen" with little counter space the combo appliance was a real find when my toaster oven conked, and I missed having a pop up toaster. Now I got both. If you indulge in sandwich size thin bread, or icky Wonder bread I can see how you may have problems. I've never had a stuck piece. I hope if this conks they are still on the market, couldn't live without it now, and I am unable to bend much with arthritis to clean a real broiler or oven, do all counter top cooking. I put a sheet of foil on the tray to avoid cleanups, melted cheese etc. Just lazy when it comes to cleaning and no dishwasher for parts.
Only quirk is the lever to switch to oven and close top off is tricky on mine, 2 or 3 tries to get it in exactly the right spot for the red oven light to come on - thus 4 stars on my unit. Had I bought it in a store for much more $ and tax I may have exchanged it, didn't want to bother boxing it up for UPS so I live around that with some degree of patience. The rest of its performance compensates, just has its own personality. Considering the low price, don't expect perfection. Others here say move lever all way to the left for oven, not mine, it's finicky. At first the elements dimmed out so soon on baking I thought it was defective, it just heats to 400 so fast being compact it holds the heat, they light back up when the thermo tells it to, not me.
I use mine most every day, top or bottom, 3 1/2 my favorite toast. I'm not very kitchen friendly so this is simple for one old lady, not that fussy about cleaning crumbs as some here, just one groove in front I have to run an old toothbrush across and most crumbs are gone. Now and then turn it upside down over the sink to shake it, but there IS a metal crumb tray to pull out to clean when needed. I keep a piece of black vinyl, a remnant I cut to fit across the top to keep dust and kitchen cooking air out, dust cover if you will. It's very close to the Foreman grill and keeps the top clean when not in use.
If you have big expectations, shop for a bigger unit, my needs are small, and it looks great with my other black/silver appliances.
