I bought this humidifier simply to soothe the bloody nose and throat every morning on a cold, dry winter day. I don't use it for medication which seems to be a popular function.
I received a black humidifier (I thought I was receiving a white one), but I think it looks better than the white one so no complaints here. I don't find the unit to be an eyesore since it looks like a "modern" gadget. There are four parts that can be disassembled for weekly cleaning: the water tank, the removable tray, the base, and the power unit. I clean it according to the instructions (which simply calls for a 20 minute bath in diluted bleach or undiluted vinegar for the trays and tank), and it's easy enough. The power unit is the only section that I can't get squeaky clean (I can't reach all areas with a toothbrush), but the manual says that's normal and shouldn't affect the operation of the unit. It's irritating though because the power unit is the only one that really builds up scale.
The water tank holds a little less than one gallon of water. The steam is not invisible like the manual says, it looks like steam coming off a boiling kettle. Running on high, the water goes fast and needs refilling often (I guesstimate about five hours). I find the gurgling noise of the humidifier amusing at times and annoying at times. On low, it's much quieter and lasts a whole night. I shut all doors in my room to trap the moisture. My room is about 200 sqft. If I leave a door open on accident, I wake up with an unpleasantly dry nose and throat.
When I first received the humidifier, I let it run on high every night. It stopped the nose bleeds but I still felt dry in the morning. The biggest problem was that the tank would be empty by the time I woke up. I tried running it on low for several nights, and found the tank a quarter full when I woke up. Running it on low all night worked just fine some nights, but wasn't enough on most. Finally, I tried running the humidifier on high about two hours before I go to sleep, then fill it back up and run it on low for the rest of the night. It really works and I'm very satisfied with the results. Since I heard hard water causes scale buildup I actually fill my water tank up with filtered water. I haven't seen much scale at all during cleaning except on the power unit two weeks into use. Overall, I love this humidifier and after some trial and error, I found a formula of use to make it most efficient for my purposes. I hope you find the same satisfactory results too!
