Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of HIC Porcelain Set of 3 Mortar and Pestle WhiteCustomer Review: A 5 star but w/ codicils - EXCELLENT gift. Pill grinding too! Summary: 5 Stars
The codicil is that my medium pestle had flaws in the grinding edge (IMHO, bacteria niches. But with careful cleaning, maybe not?) and a flaw in the ceramic glazing on the upper part. I attacked the flaw on the grinding end (it's porous & soft) with sandpaper. I have zero idea if that's "pukka" but it makes sense to me (after all, what is a mortar & pestle othen than grinding & sanding?).
HOWEVER, for the price, it's a wonderful set. It would make a great work exchange, house-warming, shower, small occasion or Xmas gift. I think if you removed it from the box and creatively packed it, it would look like a MUCH more expensive item (and if you wash it, the "Made in China" sticker will be removed from the bottom).
The smallest size is FANTASTIC for grinding pills (pets or people).
I *so* recommend this item that I just bought several for my "gift supply". I'm going to open them to check quality (will do switcheroo if necessary...maybe I was unlucky?)
Customer Review: excelent product, great value! Summary: 5 Stars
Cheaper than many of the single units you can buy this is quite a value. I bought it for the large mortar & pestle because I smoke meat and make my own rubs and it works wonderfully! the non glazed inside and end of the pestle work excelent for mashing many things. I mainly use it for a paste of garlic, pepper, oil & salt and it does the job.
the mortar is a comfortable size to hold in one hand while using and the curve of the pestle and the curve on the corners on the mortar are a perfect match.
I also like the fact that is is white which makes it easier to see your progress.
highly reccomend to anyone. even if you don't intend to use all of them it's best to have this around and they fit nicley inside each other.
Customer Review: porcelin just doesn't cut it Summary: 3 Stars
3 mortars, 3 pestles. The largest pestle is the right size for the smallest mortar and there should be 2 bigger pestles. The items are properly roughened but porcelin just doesn't do as good a job as granite. The best Mortar/Pestle is here: http://www.amazon.com/Granite-Mortar-Pestle-Large-8/dp/B001CE1YT4/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1286775867&sr=8-15 It's the same thing as the $40+ model. I bought 3 M/P: the granite, a marble, and this porcelin set and the granite one is the only one I use. They make smaller granite ones if you need a small one. The granite one makes rice flour and grinds toasted almonds in a fraction of the time it takes in porcelin or marble.
Customer Review: Great product at a great price Summary: 5 Stars
I shopped around all my local discount stores and drug stores and could not find this item at most, or when I did, it was an overpriced arty (not functional) version.
This set was less expensive than the single mortar and pestle I was able to find (which was only one - they're very hard to find)and of much better functional quality (I believe someone else mentioned the non-glazed interior, which keeps stuff from sliding around; that is, easier to pulverize with the pestle).
I'm very satisfied with this product and highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Great for little hands, too! Summary: 5 Stars
Even after reading all the good reviews, my expectations remained low for this relatively inexpensive set. However, I was very pleased with the heavy duty, well made porcelain of these mortar & pestles. I bought them for my three-year-old who loves to help in the kitchen, and she can grind spices with the best of them! Of course, they're great for adult hands as well. I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this set to anyone in the market for some absolutely terrific mortar & pestles.
