Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Global Decor 8-Piece Wooden Chopstick Set, Service for 4Customer Review: Worst chopsticks I've ever seen Summary: 1 Stars
I don't know if my expectations are too high because I have chopsticks bought from Japan, but really, these chopsticks are terrible. Reasons:
+ They're some flimsy material with a paper cover. I know this since a few of them actually began to peel after a couple of times of usage, both the ones I washed in the dishwasher and the ones I washed by hand. Even without that, you can feel the edge where the paper is attached, and on some of them it's not even attached seamlessly so that the pattern will be continuous.
+ Some of them began to bend for some reason. Now I've got bended chopsticks! :D I don't mind too much since I have other pairs, it's just funny.
+ They don't hold food at all. I've been using chopsticks for years and I'm pretty sure it's not my problem, it's the chopsticks. The three pairs I have from Japan all have very different tips so I know what chopsticks CAN do, and by comparison this is barely as good as a child's toy. The food just slides right off these. Also, the tips are way too thick. I don't know what other people eat but I eat rice with chopsticks and thick tips means little precision = no getting those grains of rice. Good chopsticks should have fine sharp tips.
+ I guess to each their own, but I personally find the design to be very non-classy, non-amusing, non-attractive. But that's just me.
Now, what chopsticks SHOULD be like:
+ Fine tips that are either rugged or very rough to the touch, so they actually hold the food and make using them fun instead of torture.
+ Some good quality material that is not wrapped paper. I've never used metal chopsticks, can't even imagine them. Rough wood and polished wood work perfect for me.
Looking at other reviews, either I'm very unlucky or people are very lucky, since apparently their chopsticks didn't peel or bend. And I'd say some might not know what good chopsticks are, but seriously, free plain old wood restaurant chopsticks work better than these for me, at least they hold the food due to being raw wood (and not smooth paper). If you complain about the feel of those chopsticks in your mouth, then you're using chopsticks wrong because you're tongue is not supposed to touch them in the first place.
Unfortunately I can't recommend anything better than these, because the reason I bought these in the first place was lack of choice in Amazon. When I was moving, I'd forgotten to pack my existing chopsticks, so until I went back home, I was left without proper chopsticks for a couple of months and thanks to these I stopped using chopsticks at all. I recommend searching elsewhere for chopsticks that meet my descriptions. Good chopsticks will last years of use, so I believe it's worth the initial trouble. But if you just want a couple of sticks to have fun with, this might be a good choice for you after all.
One last point: It's probably a bad comparison to make, but I thought these chopsticks weren't cheap at all considering the ones I have from Japan, next to which these chopsticks look ridiculous, cost about $1 a pair. Since these turn out to be about $4 a pair, counting the different circumstances, you'd think they could at least offer almost as good as authentic quality for 4 times the price. Just putting it out there.
Description of Global Decor 8-Piece Wooden Chopstick Set, Service for 48 PIECE AUTHENTIC ASIAN WOODEN CHOPSTICKS The perfect accessory to a home-cooked Asian meal, this set of eight wooden chopsticks is an invaluable addition to the table. Measuring 9-1/2 inches long, the traditionally shaped chopsticks are decorated with black tips, red bands of color, and black characters on a cream background. The Asian-inspired design looks especially attractive positioned against a tableware set of red or white bowls and plates. While the chopsticks are dishwasher-safe, it is best to wash all wooden products by hand. --Lea Werbel
