Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Ginsu 14-Piece Stainless Steel Knife Block Set, with Black Block

Customer Review: These knives are bad, really bad
Summary: 1 Stars

I've owned a set of knives I purchased for $15 10 years ago. Some of the knives have been broken or lost over time so I decided to purchase a new set of knives. I'm not picky about my knives in the least bit, but these knives are really bad. They are so dull, except the point is really pointy. It's dangerously pointy when you are having to push on the knife so hard to get it to cut through anything. There is no way of sharpening these knives since they have a pretty scalloped edge like you might find on a gingerbread house. This pretty scalloped edge is so dull it is basicly just a thin piece of metal that, as with ANY thin piece of metal, it will eventually cut with enough force applied. It looks like junk and that's because it's junk. I was able to easily return them through Amazon.

Customer Review: Not full tang, but decent knives
Summary: 3 Stars

Well, you get what you pay for. These are inexpensive knives but they seem to work relatively well. The metal is somewhat thick, but they are sharp. Some of the larger knives have oddly large handles making them less comfortable to use. The knife block has a huge "GINSU" metal logo on it, which is something less than attractive, at least to me.

These are NOT full tang knives, but for the money I guess I shouldn't have expected them to be. With moderate force on the knife the blade broke out. Ginsu is replacing the knife, but now I feel I need to be more careful with it, which makes me sad.

I only hand wash these and expect to own them for a while, but I guess with what I paid for them if they only last a year or three it won't be a huge loss.

Customer Review: Wow! These are great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I literally said "wow" when I first cut into a potato! It was so smooth and easy...My set came with a complimentary Santoku knife - and wow ... everything -from potatoes and apples and onions - just became 100x easier to cut. The bread knife is great - it cut through one of those "natural" homemadish loaves without leaving a heap of crumbs underneath, and the smaller knives are great too. I'm haven't sampled any of those more expensive sets, but I am an avid cook - and these knives just made cutting everything in my kitchen so much easier and more fun. Watch out though, they are sharp! I've cut myself twice already =(... no complaints though, these really are wonderful ...

Also, I have put them in the dishwasher and haven't noticed any rust spots.

Customer Review: After owning them awhile, a few more thoughts...
Summary: 3 Stars

1)The magnets pull out of the block. Since the knives are supposed
to be stainless they should not be magnetic. But they are.

2)They get little rust spots if not dried ultra-carefully after
each use. Once again: stainless(?).

3)The one I use regularly has dulled to the point it wouldn't cut
deep-dish pizza last night. Since these lack "full-tang construction"
pressing down hard with just the handle seems inadvisable. Thus,
I extended my index finger on the fat part of the back of the blade
for extra leverage through the crust. The result was a bad cut on my index
fingertip FROM THE BACK OF THE BLADE. No other knife has ever done this
to me and I am quite old. Beware.

Customer Review: Ginsu fan for over 35 years......
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a big fan of the Ginsu Knives. I have been using a double set of steak knives for over 35 years for everything. I have knife sets but none of them are sharp enough to cut a slice of bread. Recently i was reviewing knife sets on Amazon and found the Ginsu alive and well. I bought the stainless steel 14 piece knife block set and I am not surprised because I expected them to be sharp and good looking. They are exactly what I was looking for in a knife set. The prefessional feel and sharpness make chpping, slicing and cutting feel effortless. Unfortunately for Ginsu I will not need a knife set for another 35 years. I recommend the Ginsu Knives for anybody who wants excellant knives at a very reasonable price. Thank you ginsu......
