Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of George Foreman GR62 Double Champion Indoor/Outdoor Electric GrillCustomer Review: I Hate This Model Summary: 1 Stars
I have gone through four George Foreman grills, namely, the white jumbo GR36CB and threw them out when the teflon wore off and the white plastic body started turning ugly brown. So, this black and silver GR62SIL seemed like a nice, different change of pace. I purchased this for $99 at Linens 'N Things. What a huge mistake this model is.First, the good: Looks really nice and modern, large, easy to clean, and has 2 temperature dials: a thermostat and a timer...this is where it ends. Now, the bad: The worst thing is you have to pre-heat the unit using the timer set for 10 minutes. I can't tell you how many times I've set the timer, walked away for maybe 12 minutes, 15 minutes, and have come back to the grill to find it has now shut itself off and the grill is cool again. I have to start all over again pre-heating it. Gee, the old GR36 was a pleasure....it never shut itself off, just the light would go off to let you know it was ready for use. Second, this unit is supposed to be 1500W. Mine is stated on the bottom at 1400W, even worse. Don't put frozen meat on there as it cools the unit down, and it never sears the meat. Meat looks very unappetizing and a sickly gray color until it starts to lightly brown and by then the meat is overcooked and dry. This unit is just not hot enough. What were they thinking about when manufacturing this loser??? Third: This is the second unit in three weeks. The first one just went back to Linen's 'N Things to be replaced. The first one had several issues, namely, it was poorly constructed. The lid was very wobbly and the little white rubber feet underneath kept popping out of place. I'd move the unit and the feet would fall out. Then I went to make dinner on the last uneventful night, and I attempted to pre-heat the unit. When I opened the lid, a teeny-weeny screw about a quarter inch long, flew out of the side of the unit. It was the screw the secured the right side of the top grill to the rest of the unit. My husband and I tried for nearly an hour to get the screw to go back in. There was no way to tighten it. Something was obviously wrong. How could such a miniscule screw hold the grill in place? Now the right side was hanging and we obviously were not eating dinner that night. We went to investigate why the screw would not catch only to discover the part that it screwed into located between the plates, was crushed. I ran back to exchange the defective unit. And to my surprise, LNT asked, "What happened? Did a screw fall out?" Is the new unit any better? Yes, so far, as far as its construction. Does it cook any better? Absolutely not. I'm hoping it dies an early death so I can throw it in the garbage. I can't say I'll never buy another Foreman grill, but I may have to go back to the simple styled GR36 jumbo one and live with the browning of the white body and the early demise of the teflon coating. They really need to improve it, but that unit cooked awesome.
Description of George Foreman GR62 Double Champion Indoor/Outdoor Electric GrillNow you can grill anytime anywhere, indoors or out, with this extra large Foreman grill. Like all the other Foremans, this one features the sloped non-stick cooking surface that allows grease and fat to drain away. The temperature control and timer ensure your food will be cooked to perfection. Embedded heating elements in both top and bottom speed cooking and seal in moisture and flavor. There is a grill stand available separately to make cooking outdoors even easier and safer. With 200 square inches of grilling space, this version of the celebrated George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine grills 12 burgers or chicken breasts at once, perfect for entertaining. The 1500-watt appliance's appeal lies in its simplicity, convenience, and speed--not to mention its fat-fighting ability. Two grills cook burgers, steaks, chicken, sausage, fish, shrimp, and vegetables simultaneously from the top and bottom--indoors or outdoors. The resulting grill marks not only look appetizing but also contribute caramelized flavor. The bottom grill's deep channels collect fat, and the grill is sloped so the fat runs off into a dishwasher-safe aluminum tray (two included) stationed under the unit's front. A floating 2-inch-high hinge permits grilling of extra-thick steaks. One dial on the stay-cool handle controls temperature; the other is a 30-minute timer. Because the grills are nonstick, cleanup is a snap, requiring just a quick scrape with a plastic spatula (two included) and a quick wipe with a paper towel or a sponge. Overall, the grill measures 20-1/4 inches wide, 8 inches high, and 21-1/4 inches deep. It's made of rugged black-and-gray cast aluminum and stands upright for compact storage. --Fred Brack
