Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of George Foreman GR26CB Family Size Plus Grill with Cookbook, WhiteCustomer Review: Indispensable! Summary: 5 Stars
I am following the Atkins diet, so I eat a lot of meat. I don't really care about cutting the fat; this is purely a convenience item for me, and it's a winner! This grill makes my diet very easy-- I keep frozen burgers, pork chops, and steaks in the freezer and throw 'em on the grill when I get home, and 10 or so minutes later I have dinner. It's faster than you think because of the two surfaces, so some beginners report things getting too dry-- they're probably just overcooking. For me, by the time the light clicks off the first time it's already somewhat overdone. It also tastes way better than broiling in an electric-only oven or panfrying. (I wouldn't need this at all if I still had a gas broiler.) I think it really makes a difference when cooking from frozen. This size model can hold two burgers or two small pork chops but if you want to cook two steaks, you don't get to cook them at the same time. I'm very glad I went for this size immediately (even though I'm single) because the smaller one would have been a serious waste of time... unless all you want to do is cook a single burger. If you *are* just cooking a single burger, here's a trick: when your burger is almost done, apply cheese, then slowly lower the lid and hold it not quite touching the cheese. You get very nicely melted cheese. Don't worry if you accidentally do contact the cheese-- it will clean right off. Really. It's amazing. But if you just let the lid crash on the cheese you'll have toasted cheese stuck to the top cooking surface. It has some issues with uneven thicknesses. Whatever isn't even with the highest part of your food won't get the contact from both sides. So if you're cooking a thin pork chop with a thick one, expect to have to manually flip the thin one and cook it longer. Bacon is too thin to ever get contact from both sides-- I'd rather just bake it. I've had good results with chicken even though it's irregular in shape. My staples are flat meats so they all handle perfectly. The thickness issue is why I'm hesitant to buy the bigger one-- sometimes I can get by with a burger next to a pork chop but that capacity is very limited; if I'm cooking for more people who want different things it might really be a problem. I don't know if thawed meats are less sensitive to this issue as I usually cook from frozen. I think they recommend thawed meats but I save so much money by buying meat on sale and then never having it spoil. My grill is two years old and its only signs of wear (under heavy use) are that the plastic is browning on the sides and the nonstick surface is getting thin in spots. It still cleans up fairly easily-- I use a microfiber cloth or a dishcloth-- but will put it in the sink (don't immerse) occasionally for a more thorough cleaning with a brush. The spatula is useless and lost. If my grill became unusable tomorrow, I would cheerfully and immediately buy a new one; I have had my money's worth from this one.
Description of George Foreman GR26CB Family Size Plus Grill with Cookbook, WhiteThis super-sized grilling machine not only cooks great steaks, chops, and burgers, it can be used for fajitas, burritos, and taco fillings too. Fast, easy, and low-fat meals await you and your family. What are you waiting for? With nonstick cooking surfaces measuring 9 inches square, this family-size version of the celebrated George Foreman Lean Mean Fat- Reducing Grilling Machine grills four or five burgers or chicken breasts at once. The electric appliance's appeal lies in its simplicity and countertop convenience--not to mention its fat-fighting ability. The double-sided grill cooks burgers, steaks, chicken, sausage, fish, shrimp, and vegetables top and bottom in minutes. Grill marks not only look appetizing, they contribute caramelized flavor. The bottom grill's deep grooves collect fat, and the grill is sloped so the fat runs off into a dishwasher-safe plastic tray (two included) stationed under the unit's front. Because the grill is nonstick, cleanup is a snap: a quick scrape with a plastic spatula (two included) and a quick wipe with a paper towel or a sponge. Accompanying the grill is a 227-page cookbook containing recipes for such lip-smacking dishes as Halibut with Avocado Lemon Cream, Dijon Flank Steak, New Orleans Pork Ribs, Stuffed Green Chile Burgers, and Garlic Stuffed Red Potatoes. Overall, the grill measures 10-1/2 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 6-1/2 inches high, and is clad in hard, gleaming, white plastic for a sleek appearance. --Fred Brack
