Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of George Foreman GR20WHT XL GrillCustomer Review: great for low-carb dining and fast 'real' meals Summary: 4 Stars
GOOD POINTS:
Several of my friends have already said that they believe that this little tv-infomercial item will become the next staple of the kitchen. It is fast, makes great juicy grilled food because it basically sears the food on both sides simultaneously so no moisture can get out. It's the best for low carb dieting. It's also the best for people like me who hate eating out, don't have the time for gourmet cooking during the weekdays and refuse to eat out of a can or out of a box. It does great grilled veggies too.
I've had mine for over 1 year now and I haven't found the 'on/off' switch. Either I'm oblivious or it doesn't have one. You have to pull the plug to turn it off. For me, it's very troubling to have to do that and see the little spark everytime you yank the plug out. On top of that, you have to train yourself to do it and treat it a lot like your iron or you'll have a fire-hazard on your hands. I would not only feel really stupid but I'd also love it if someone would tell me that I've been overlooking some little switch on the underside for 1 year.
It's extremely annoying to clean. Either you have to clean it hot (and risk burning yourself), or you have to clean it somewhere near water and the sink because you can't just magically wipe away cold hamburger grease with a papertowl no matter how much the commercials might want you to think you can. It's bulky and hard to manipulate in the sink and the directions say, 'don't immerse in water.'
This product feels like the beta version of a great appliance. It's a great idea no doubt, but it still has the feeling and functionality of a 19.95 Ginsu knife set.
Customer Review: Problem-solver, by fermed Summary: 5 Stars
A friend on mine wrote a glowing review of the Foreman small grill, and so I was hinting around about how nice it would be to have one of them, when, lo! someone gave me one as a St. Ferdinand's present (a day I celebrate, often with a tapas party). So this report applies only on the XL size.Since I have had it, it has been used on a daily basis. I retired an old toaster-oven that created an ugly visual on the kitchen counter and replaced it with this carefully designed little jewel. I no longer toast my bread, but slap the slices on the grill and voila! I have tried chicken breasts on the grill, and the reports of their excellence have not been exaggerated by other reviewers. But I also tried chicken thighs (which were on special at the market) and the results were equally impressive. I tried a steak (which I slightly overcooked) and a wide variety of grilled sandwiches, all of which were perfect. I have not tried it on creatures from the deep, but my impression is that it will do good things to them. Cleaning is relatively easy. I like to spray a little olive oil on the grill before I use it on potentially sticky things (not on breads), and it makes cleaning the surface all the more easy. My only complaint is that the grill does not get as hot as I think it should. Even at its highest temperature it does not do a quick searing of the surface of what is being cooked, and that is a (minor) disadvantage. Otherwise I am a true convert and believer in this little wonder machine, which has become an essential tool in my kitchen.
Customer Review: It's No Hype That This Is A Great Product! Summary: 5 Stars
Even grizzled old mountain men like me get tired of a steady diet of squirrel stew. So, on those increasingly frequent occasions that I can rustle up some lean hamburger that my significant friend buys at the supermarket on her way home from work, I whip out the new deluxe version of this handy and quite simple device and presto! In a second or so have four big burgers to stave off that ravenous hunger we mountain men are famous for. I even share the burgers with the lady in question, although I suspect she likes the fact that even I can't screw them up, and that I can also quickly clean up the grill and put it away, all by myself! Just like an adult! And like one of the other reviewers below, she has found a lot of innovative ways to rustle up a variety of dishes using this, and we have worked this new deluxe grille for a couple of weeks, and to my mind have already more than made up for the sixty or so bucks we paid for it. It is easy to use, quick to clean up, and healthy because of all the grease it whisks away from the food itself. Now I even keep some of those pre-packed hamburger patties in the freezer for emergencies, and as long as I get a warning call a few hours before I need them, the patties are thawed and ready to throw into this infernal machine. Gee, ain't technology great! It is a great product and I highly recommend it, even for history buffs like me!
Customer Review: Surprise! Summary: 5 Stars
This past Christmas I purchased a George Foreman for each of my four children and their families. I also bought one for myself. I had not used the grill, but everybody in the store raved about how efficient they were, and the concept of cooking the fat out of meats was inviting. Before Xmas, my oldest son called and told me I would love my gift from he and his family. I told him my wife and I were sending him something he would like. I live in california, while he lives in St. Louis, so his Christmas morning came before mine. At eight my time, he was on the phone telling me to open my present. He said he loved what I had given him, and wanted me to see their gift to me. surprise! A George Foreman grill. My oldest daughter also received two George Foreman Grills. Altogether, my family purchased or received six grills for Christmas, and all are used frequently. We all use them at least three times weekly. They are quick, easy to use, and meats, sausages, fish and, yes, even vegetables are easy to prepare. And cleaning them is simple. This grill is a great gift, whether giving or receiving. By the way, the extra's were gifts. My Mother and Father in law now have George Foreman Grills, and my daughter found a good home for her extra.
Customer Review: What a Grill! Summary: 4 Stars
I have been the proud owner of 2 of George Foreman's grills (the medium size one that has room for 4 hamburgers and now the "extra-large family size grill), and I would not trade them for anything. I love the ease in which they clean up and how the food remains moist & tender inside. The only disadvantage I have found is -- for cleaning ease -- you really need to clean the grill right after you remove the food while the grill surface is still hot/fairly warm and that the unit is not immersible in water, but that one disadvantage is minute compared to its many advantages. I also love the fact that it has taken the drudgery out of cooking after a hard day at the office. I can whip up a meal in nothing flat and it looks as though I have really put alot of time into it. Even my husband likes it on the occasions that he has to "bach" it. I would recommend the George Foreman products to anyone and look forward to expanding my line of cookware with more of his products. They are all great products ... I KNOW ... because what I don't have, my friends do and therefore I have tried everything he has out on the market at present and am looking forward to the introduction of more fine products from the George Foreman line.
