Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of George Foreman GR10AWHT Champ GrillCustomer Review: The Favorite Thing in My Kitchen! Summary: 5 Stars
This grill is so wonderful! I love it so much that I call him "George," because he is too fabulous not to have a first name. I've had my George for FIVE years now, and it works and cleans as easily as it did the first time I used it.
George came to me as a going-to-college gift, and he received a lot of community use: first in the common kitchen area of dorms, then in the kitchen of a shared townhouse, now in an apartment where "real" grills aren't allowed. I always took care of George, but sometimes other people forgot, until I turned them on to the cleaning secret: take 2 paper towels, squirt them with soap, dampen but don't soak the paper towels, and shut the grill on top of them (after unplugging it). After you finish your meal and conversation, George will be easier to clean than ever. It also helps if you spray some Pam on him before you get started cooking.
Here's a few tips for the uninitiated--especially those who really love cooking and food and have doubts about George's performance.
1.) Chicken: comes out perfectly in George; you get great grill marks and thorough cooking in less time than it would take you in the oven or on a traditional grill. My chicken has never been dry from George. Chicken is the easiest thing to cook for those trying to figure out how long it takes George to cook things, because George doesn't let you really overcook it. Also, don't be afraid of putting some serious marinade on your bird. Just spray with Pam before you lay the chicken on, then do the paper towel trick after you take it off.
2.) Beef--Hamburger: George makes just about the best hamburgers ever. You'll love watching the fat run off; and you get the satisfying just grilled look--without smelling like Charcoal for the rest of the day.
3.) Beef--Steak: George--for whatever reason--does not give you the rich brown color of steaks grilled outdoors. However, I've got some tips for maximizing George's performance for steak lovers like me. First: Marinate the steak. Especially if you use a wosterchire based marinade, it will improve the color dramatically. Second: Salt your steak. Salt + Heat = nice brown finish. Third: consider altering your recipe to Kebabs. Because of George's angle and lid, he may not close neatly and evenly over your slab of beef. If you cut it up, the meat gets exposed to more marinade, and you get to position the meat so that the lid shuts evenly, and all pieces get equal cooking time. Plus, turning your recipe into kebabs allows you to eat more healthy vegetables. Finally: don't overcook your meat. I made kebabs last night and they were at medium-rare in less than 2 minutes. If you wait five minutes--you will be disappointed, unless you like your steak like shoe leather.
4.) Tuna and Lamb: I recommend leaving George open for these delicate meats. You can control the results a lot better, and George just doesn't close that well over a 2" thick slab of tuna or lambchop! It's just common sense.
5.) Veggies: George can do roasted corn--but it is one of the few things that will take him longer than a traditional grill to do. If you want some roasted corn, don't wrap it in husks, just put it straight in--and be prepared for it to take 15-20 minutes as you rotate it all around.
George also makes some mean eggplant and zucchini. Brush (don't drizzle if you're trying to drop pounds) some olive oil on the sliced veggies, then sprinkle with Kosher salt. For 1/2" slices, about 1 minute should do it. Your results will look and taste straight out of a cooking show! Since George is so easy to clean (and probably cleaner than most grills), the veggies don't get the overly smoky smell and they don't pick up the taste of the other stuff cooked out there.
Bell Peppers and tomatoes just don't shine as much as if you'd grilled them outside. But to improve the performance leave the Bell peppers in about 5 minutes or so, turning occassionally--and squirt something on them: marinade, lemon juice, lime juice. Tomatoes seem to stay together better if you leave George open. Put some salt on to help dry them up so they will stay together better.
Onions are very good in George. Just cut some wedges, put some toothpicks through to hold them together, and enjoy!
6.) Fruits--I've used George for Mangoes and Plantains; and the key here is to use common sense. Closing George is okay for Plantains, but it will squish a mango slice. Limes, lemons, and oranges come out with great grill marks and add that extra something as a garnish.
If you really don't have a George; you must order one! This size is perfect for couples, singles, and students. Once again, mine is in phenomenal condition after five years of some pretty hard living, and everything is intact and functioning as well as the day I took George out of the box.
UPDATE--after 6 years of service, I retired George because the nonstick surface was beginning to peel. From the store, I bought what I thought was an identical grill. However, the model # GR10WHT (no A), is inferior to this model. It has a much smaller grill surface--a rounded rectangle big enough for two small hamburgers. The model pictured here has a more squared surface that easily accomodates two chicken breasts vertically, and the new one only fits one chicken breast horizontally. If you buy in the store, be sure you get the model pictured here.
Description of George Foreman GR10AWHT Champ GrillGrills burgers, chicken, fish, fajitas, even thick steaks in minutes. Incredibly easy to clean Superior quality, non-stick coated grilling plates wipe off with a damp sponge. No need to add any fats don't cook your burgers, bacon or shops in a pool of hot grease. Patented grooves channel the fat and greases into a separate tray. Knock out the fat you'll see the results immediately? This patented grill cooks from both sides at once. This smaller version of George Foreman's famous "as seen on TV" Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine is perfect for preparing quick, low-fat meals for one or two people. The double-sided grill surface heats in less than five minutes to an even temperature perfect for grilling most foods. The high grill grooves and slight angle allow fat to run off the grill as food cooks, and the nonstick surface requires little or no additional fat for cooking. The plastic, grooved spatula works well to scrape off any bits that may have stuck to the surface. Meats and fish are the obvious choices to take advantage of the Grilling Machine's fat-reduced grilling, but vegetables and tofu dogs work well too. The double-sided grill means food cooks twice as fast, leaves attractive grill marks, and generates surprisingly little smoke. --Julija Gelazis
