Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of George Foreman GR10ABWI Champ Grill with Bun Warmer, Indigo

Customer Review: A capable little cooker
Summary: 4 Stars

Having used the Champ almost everyday for a month to grill pork, hamburger, chicken, various cuts of beef, and, once, vegetables, I feel I can offer up a worthwhile review.

Warm-up: About five minutes. I've read some posts that complain it takes forever to heat up, but I set my timer for five minutes, it goes off, and I load up the grill. Four or five minutes later it's meal time. (Ignore the "on" light; just go with a timer.) I can only conclude that these reviewers either have slow-to-heat units, or they have a poor sense of time.

The vegetables I grilled (green onions and bell peppers) came out kinda soggy, but that may just be my unfamiliarity with grilling vegetables versus meat.

Portion height: Basically, the Champ doesn't like anything thicker than about an inch-and-a-half. Once or twice a chicken breast that was really thick on one side ended up a bit dry on the thinner end by the time everything was safe to eat. So now I just cut thick stuff in half. My two-inch thick pork loins cook up in jig time when I cut them into inch-thick servings. Essentially, this is not the tool for hand's-breadth-thick filet mignon.

Clean-up: Yeah, this is a bit of a pain, but it's only been once or twice that it seemed to take longer to clean than to cook. The two easy-cleaning tricks are: 1) Spray some PAM on the grill before you cook, and 2) Clean the grill while it's still a little warm (run a paper towel across it while your food is cooling, and you'll remove almost all of the residue). If you wait until the grill has gotten cold it will likely take a good five minutes to get clean.

The first time I used the grill I had some residue that stuck (and doesn't seem to want to come unstuck), but that's the only problem I've had, and I've coated, rubbed, marinated, and sauced most of what I grilled. The rest of the grill cleans up pretty quickly, and the grilled-on stuff hasn't grown or negatively affected anything I've cooked.

The big sponge debate is way overblown. Again, just run a paper towel over the surface of the grill while it's still warm, and then wipe it later with a sponge, and dry it with another paper towel.

The spatula isn't exactly useless (it will pull stuff off however awkwardly), but a new silicone spatula was a welcome addition to my kitchen.

Safety: I don't understand how people are burning themselves. I've lifted the lid, done the paper towel thing, grabbed food off the grill with my bare fingers... the usual stuff one does when cooking, and I've never come close to getting burned. Maybe I'm just due, but I think you've got to be more than a little clumsy or really not paying attention to get burned.

Grease runoff: Yes, it is amazing (and a little gross) to see how much grease runs off a hamburger patty. Sausage is the other "big winner" when it comes to shedding grease. Pork, chicken, and steak will also shed some grease, but nothing compared to the tablespoon-plus that comes off hamburger.

Cooking size: Hey, it's not a "bicycle built for two," it's a grill made for one. This said, I've yet to have a problem fitting two (smallish) hamburger patties, or one (really large) chicken breast onto it.

Cooking time: This is one of my few complaints. I think the times in the booklet are way too long. If I leave a pork loin in for five minutes, I've got shoe leather (and, no, I'm not risking my health; after four minutes, tops, that piece of pig is done). Maybe it's unfair to criticize a piece of equipment for being too quick, but it did lead to some wasted food.

Bun warmer: Haven't used it, but whenever I've put my hand near it, it's been warm so I guess it works. If I want a toasted, as opposed to a warmed, bun, I'll fire up a pan while the meat is grilling.

Truly, the only other complaints I have are the number of paper towels I go through, and the increased amount of dish cleaning (to say nothing of dishpan hands) I do now that I'm cooking more.

Conclusion: If you're looking for an inexpensive grill that offers a fast, healthy option for preparing meals, I definitely recommend the Champ. (NOTE: I'm only giving it four stars because there's way too much grade inflation here. Come on folks, it's a grill. Does it really deserve a life-changing five stars?)

Description of George Foreman GR10ABWI Champ Grill with Bun Warmer, Indigo

By cooking foods from the top as well as from the bottom simultaneously, maximum moisture and flavor is retained. The one thing that is not retained is the fat, which runs out along channels in the slightly slanted grill to a dishwasher safe drip-tray out front. The grill marks provide caramelized flavor and an appealing apperance for steaks, chicken breasts, seafood, veggies and more. While your food is cooking you can also warm up buns, tortillas, rolls and other bread items on top. After the party's over simply scrape with the plastic spatula and wipe clean with a paper towel or sponge. This model is an ideal size for cooking food for one or two people.
Topped by a bun warmer with a transparent lid in bright blue, this Champ is a variant of the popular George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine. The electric appliance's appeal lies in its simplicity and countertop convenience--not to mention its fat-fighting ability. The double-sided grill (a 6-by-7-inch nonstick cooking surface) cooks burgers, steaks, chicken, sausage, fish, shrimp, and vegetables top and bottom in minutes. (Recipes accompany the grill.) Grill marks not only look appetizing they contribute caramelized flavor. The bottom grill's deep grooves collect fat, and the grill is sloped so the fat runs off into a dishwasher-safe plastic tray stationed under the unit's front.

The nonstick bun warmer draws heat from the grill and can be used while food is grilling or by itself. (The entire unit, grill and bun warmer, turns on by plugging in the power cord.) The warmer heats a burger's bun as well as other bread items, including English muffins, tortillas, pita bread, sliced bagels, and croissants. Because the grill is nonstick, cleanup is a snap: just a quick scrape with a plastic spatula (included) and a quick wipe with a paper towel or a sponge. --Fred Brack
