Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of George Foreman GGR50B Indoor/Outdoor Grill

Customer Review: My mother loves this thing
Summary: 4 Stars

Although I personally don't own one of these, my mother who doesn't have internet and probably never will does have one. It sits year round right outside her back door on the enclosed porch and she uses it year round. If you think of it as the more popular clam shell style Foreman grills but you have to flip it yourself then you understand what this is.

She's had her's about 3 year now without replacing a part. Cooks on it 3-4 times a week and just loves it. She'll be 77 this year and she loves how she can still have the grill experience without the mess of charcoal or the hassles of gas. It seems to be much safer around children although that doesn't mean it's cool to the touch, it's not. It does dissipate it's temperature pretty fast though.

It's safe to have on a balcony or porch that's covered and even screened. I wouldn't use this indoors as it generates a good bit of smoke as one should expect a gas grill to do but without the huge heat factor, maybe mom's needs more deeply cleaned. It's ready to cook in about 5-8 minutes most of the year round, she lives in Indiana for winter reference.

I have to admit that I've been pretty impressed with the food that comes off it, much the same as a gas grill. The less you clean the inside the more it has that gas grill mojo although common sense tells you to clean the grill surface after each use.

All told, if you want a reasonably priced and safer all round alternative to a gas or charcoal grill this is the way to go.

Customer Review: No-fuss barbecuing!
Summary: 5 Stars

Until last weekend, I was barbecue-challenged. I had a Weber charcoal grill that was almost never used, because I could never figure out how to grill a steak (or anything else) to perfection. I never knew how much charcoal to use, or when it was hot enough, and hated the messy cleanup afterwards. Then one Sunday I saw a flyer in the newspaper from a department store that was advertising the George Foreman indoor/outdoor electric grill for sale at only [money amount], plus there was a 20% off coupon. I read reviews of it at Amazon.com, and decided that there wasn't too much risk in buying it. The instruction booklet includes general guidelines on how long to cook different types of food, and what heat setting. My first evening, I grilled some swordfish, and it was absolutely delicious. The next evening, I grilled lamb chops, and these too were superb. Clean up was so easy since the grill is non-stick -- no spent charcoals to throw away! No need to buy propane gas! Just unplug! I think that even my husband, who has never cooked anything in his life, can learn to use it. The surface is large enough that you can cook for friends. I'm looking forward to barbecuing every weekend, even in winter! The only very minor negative: unlike a charcoal or gas grill, it can't be used in case of power failure (as we had in the Washington DC area recently after a storm).

Customer Review: Pros and Cons of the Foreman Outdoor Grill
Summary: 3 Stars

Let's get right to it:

Pros:

1. Can be used on decks and balconies where gas or charcoal are forbidden as a fire risk.
2. Small footprint, can be used tableside or on pedestal
3. Foreman (Salton) quality is reliable
4. No gas or charcoal lighter flavor--great if you are chemically sensitive (I happen to be.)
5. Quick heating
6. No need to replenish a gas bottle or run out of charcoal.

Now the Cons:

1. Be careful of the fat drainage; if you clog the hole, it can get ugly, real ugly.
2. On that note, if you have a composite deck--one made of resin and sawdust or even a wood deck, any spilled fat or juices will stain your planks. An outdoor rug or mat under the grill is a good idea--something that will catch drips.
3. The grill really isn't as hot as really hot charcoal or gas and you won't get that char-broiled taste. No different than cooking indoors.
4. Requires an outlet.

This type of grill is very common in Europe, where charcoal and gas are not popular or outright forbidden (for example, in Germany, where fires are taken seriously. In a country where houses are cheek-by-jowl, fire prevention is of primary concern.) If you are in an area that does not allow open fire or outdoor grilling, this is a very excellent alternative.

Customer Review: A Great Sub For The Bad Days
Summary: 4 Stars

We bought the GGR50b for a grilling substitute for them nasty (pouring down rain, subzero temp) days. Needless to say, there's no substitute for a Weber Charcoal with a chimney to get the coals going to eliminate the lighter taste.

Never-the-less, I purchased this grill to sub for the bad days. Not many recipes to be found online for this model as it is merely a flameless outdoor grill without the outdoor grilled flavor. The cooking times are similar to a Weber but combining the searing/cooking per side into one. Weber charcoal standards are 3/3min searing and 3/3min covered. I am not a health addict so George's recipes look bland to me.

I have used this grill twice in a 2 month period. (I cook with Weber in the snow :-)) Once for indoor burgers, which I'd advise using lean beef otherwise your smoke alarms will sound off, and last nite for New York Strips with bone in. Knowing the griddle type cooking would not produce an outdoor flame broiled taste I found a rub which was praised by many cowboys but not for a griddle. I had to modify a bit but with 7 minutes per side at level 5 with this rub and an olive oil base, I might mark a few more cold/rainy days as nasty out.

Clean-up is ok as long as the meat is not fatty. A decent sub for them bad days.

Customer Review: backup grill
Summary: 5 Stars

Originally I saw my mother's George Forman grill (smaller indoor one with lid). Then I saw my brother's Party Size grill. Both of them love their grill. I was able to taste the food from both and found it very tasty and easy to use. I decided to do some investigating on my own intending to purchase the party size grill, when I saw the indoor/outdoor grill. I was impressed with the fact that it appeared to be a bigger cooking surface and the price I found was within reason. I purchased it for the purpose of using it as an extra grill for a cookout I was having. No one used the gas grill at all. I have since used it indoors without the stand, making it convient on rainy days. It is the easiest grill to use and clean that we have ever owned. You can cook everything evenly, because there are no coals to level out. It can easily hold 4 to 5 steaks, 10 big hamburgers, and the list goes one. I am sure there are some drawbacks to those that swear by gas/charcoal grills, but my gas grill has found a permanent residence in our shed, while George sits ready to use at any time indoors or out on our back porch. I am so impressed, that I am purchasing one for my parents for Christmas, to replace the charcoal grill that takes for ever to heat up and messy to clean. I'm sure they'll love it too!
