Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of George Foreman GGR50B Indoor/Outdoor GrillCustomer Review: George Foreman Grill Worth the Price! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased my grill second hand. It's over a month now that I've been using it...and I LOVE it!! BUT!! There COULD be some improvements. First of all...I received no manual with mine. I can't for the life of me figure out where the lid is supposed to "rest" on the grill? Second...indoors I've had to adjust and re-adjust where the grill is positioned so that the grease from whatever is cooking will run off properly into the drain tray. I live in an almost 100 year old house...so the floors are NOT even! That is an important factor when cooking with this grill indoors. Here's a bit of advice for folks with uneven flooring...place the grill so that the drip-pan is placed toward the downhill slope of your flooring:) Third...even when you have the grill on the pedestal evenly placed...EXPECT A MESS UNDERNEATH! Runoff & condensation from the lid will cause a bit of a splatter underneath your grill! And the grill placed on the pedestal is just a wee bit more wobbly than I like. One more downfall....if you clean your grilltop in your sink...BE CAREFUL!! Mine was perfect when I got it...but now has the metal showing around the edges where I've been cleaning it using my kitchen sink. These grills can NOT take hard knocks!!!!! I've learned from this not to EVER use anything but teflon safe utensils on my grill! And even then...be GENTLE!
Ok...enough with the downside...this grill shadows all I've ever used! And that includes charcoal, propane and open fire. No more bursting into flame and singeing your eyebrows off...no more nasty tasting food...no more over or under-cooked food...no more waiting for heat strong enough to cook...no more whining about it's "to cold to grill outdoors"...or no more "I'm not ALLOWED to use aything but electric in my apartment or college dorm"...
This is a GREAT buy!!~ I think it needs just a few improvements...but all in all...BRAVO MR. FOREMAN!!
Now...get on those improvements George!!
Customer Review: How did I ever live without 5 Stars
I've had a small Forman grill for years, tucked away under the counter, forgotten. When I received an Amazon gift card, I was looking for an outdoor grill for my patio. I never considered a Forman grill, since I was never thrilled with the results from the smaller one. I felt that it cooked the meat too fast and was hard to regulate. When I read the great reviews for this grill, I thought I would give it a shot. THIS IS THE BEST COOKING DEVICE I BOUGHT IN YEARS, besides my electric programmable pressure cooker. I've used it nearly every night since it arrived. I always use the highest setting without the cover on. The meat and veggies cook quickly and come beautifully browned. I've added various seasonings and sauces that turn out a gourmet meal. When cooking chicken legs and thighs, I use the cover either at the begining or the end of the cooking period to ensure doneness. Last night I laid out raw pizza dough on the grill, with olive oil and fresh herbs. Cooked it on one side, then flipped it over to cook on the other side. Hubby was thrilled with the "bread". I suppose I could have topped it with cheese and sauce after the second side was done and put on the lid for "Pizza"....maybe next time. Fajitas were the best we ever had. Cooked the meat, kept it on the grill off to the side. Added the veggies, cooked them, then tossed everything together. The huge cooking surface made enough for 4 persons.
Others had noted that the grill wabbled. To avoid that, I did not use the second post that would have raised the grill higher. By only using one pole, the grill sits lower and is perfectly stable.
PS This is truly a non stick surface. Clean-up couldn't be easier, even the next day.
Customer Review: Great when you can't use a real grill Summary: 4 Stars
The most disappointing thing about moving into an apartment was no longer being able to grill. While this is no substitute for a gas or a charcoal grill, it does the job nicely on my balcony or in my kitchen. I have so far cooked burgers, hot dogs, and fish on it. I have yet to try steaks or chicken. On the highest setting I was able to get grill marks on the burgers, which was nice. I'd say just make sure you cook your meats at the highest setting if you want to come close to a real grill. While the base of the grill is a bit bulky for my kitchen counter, it does make a nice storage space for the electric cord and the silicone tipped tongs I bought especially for the grill. I have not had a problem getting the top to hang off the side of the grill, you just have to look and make sure it catches along the edge. Putting it a little bit off-center helped that as well. The non-stick coating is great. Everything just slides right off with soap, water, and a little scrubbing of the sponge.
The one negative I can say about this is the fat was not draining properly the last time I cooked burgers. So I ended up with some burgers that were essentially being fried in their own fat at the same time as they were being grilled. Maybe my balcony was on a weird angle, I don't know. I gently started pushing some of the grease and fat into the opening so it would drain properly and that helped out a little bit.
All in all I'm glad I bought this and I look forward to using it on my balcony for the rest of the summer, and indoors when it starts to get cold out.
Customer Review: A wonderful indoor grill Summary: 5 Stars
I love George Foreman grills. I have two of them. One is a flat grill with a lid on and the other is GGR50B that I am writing a review about. I purchased GGR50B January when heavy snow downed all over the city and it was my oldest's birthday. It was easy to set up and operate for a person like me who do not know much about machenical stuff. Setting up the grill was actually done within 5 minutes.
I was a little worried about the electricity bill coming the next month. However, I was so surprised to notice that the bill the month came out to be as much as it used to be. Rather a lot of saving compared to using our traditional gas oven, with which I had to pay hundreds of $$ for a few times of cooking. This grill is a great energy saver! When you set the temperature to 350 - 400, it heats up to the setting in a minute and hibernates itself unless you open up the lid too often. Our electric bill never goes over $40-$50 a month, which is a lot cheaper than using a gas oven that used to make me pay $200-250 a month. The truth is electricity is cheapter than gas!!! Now i have paid off the gas bill that was a little behind, and never need to use the gas oven again! I cook meat, pizza, fish sticks, cheese sticks, hamburgers, buns, rice( put rice in a little steal pot and put the pot on the grill ), picnic pork shoulder, and anything I could imagine is possible with this George Foreman GGR50B grill.
Cons: Too bad the lower body is made of plastic. If it was made of steal and was compatible with charchoal use, this grill would be the best grill ever.
Customer Review: This one is BETTER than the newer GGR200 series...! Summary: 5 Stars
First off, I am Not a big fan of the Forman grills (I have a very good Hamilton beach grill I use). I bought this one because of it's size and use for a indoor/outdoor grill function, as if I was cooking on a typical gas grill outside. First thing I noticed is it's Quality. For the discounted price, you get a very well made METAL tubing grill (the base is plastic). I read some reviews saying its not sturdy, well mine is, very nice design, no complaints. The grill tray itself is very large, the size of a normal gas grill size. You can cook alot of hamburgers on it (prob 10 if you wanted to) or a couple of steaks, wrap some Corn on the Cob in foil and throw it on, just as if you were using a gas or charcoal grill.
It heats very well, cooks like a regular grill in that you flip the burgers and such. Grease goes into the grease tray, works nice. I like the nice stand it comes with, you can set it all by itself in the middle of the kitchen and save counter space, and you can bring it to the back deck. Also....get this grill (GGR50 series) they have a newer version (GGR200 series) it's SMALLER than this omne but costs the same, I think they re-designed the grill save costs, not to make it better. The grill tray doesnt come out as easy in the new one, Nor does the power chord unplug in the new GGR200 series of this grill, it does with this grill. The listed price for the new one is $99 but amazong sells it for $79......this grill was listed at $119 and sells for the same, you do the math which one is a better bargain...get this Grill!
