Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Furi FUR626 Ozitech Diamond Fingers Pro Knife Sharpener

Customer Review: Ups and Downs
Summary: 3 Stars

First, the case is cheap. I definitely feel ripped off due to cheapness with which the sharpener housing was built. It's not just substandard, it's CHEAP. Mine started to crack within moments of opening the item. And I was even very gentle. The sharpener itself is "better." I may be a bit picky about sharpeners, because I expect my knives to be sharp enough to shave with. This sharpener does NOT yield that result, despite how the advertising leads you to believe otherwise. However, it IS very easy to use, and sharpens quickly to whatever "barely acceptable" degree of sharpness that it's capable of putting on your blades. Overall I suppose that I'm glad I have it due to the relative ease of use and compact nature of the device. However, this doesn't keep me from feeling ripped off at the cheapness of manufacturing, and the fact that it does NOT make my knives razor sharp. I suppose I'm rather sick of false advertising claims, which most manufacturer's are prone to these days. I vote for bringing quality back to the forefront of industry but... blah, that's off topic.

Bottom line--
Sharpening Effectiveness: 6 out of 10
Case Quality: 2 out of 10
Ease of Use: 8 out of 10

Customer Review: Terrific knife sharpener
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife was given an expensive Furi knife as a gift. I didn't want this to be relegated to the bottom of the kitchen odd-and-ends drawer because I couldn't sharpen it properly. I have (or had) number of different sharpeners, all useless or difficult to use: tungsten carbide pull-through, traditional steel, can-opener &c. So I got the Ozitech because it's Furi's own sharpener.

It's brilliant and easy to use. Not only does it keep the Furi in good shape it did a terrific sharpening job on a lot of other knives I haven't used for years. A quality Victorinox boning knife is now razor-sharp and a pleasure to use. I resurrected a couple of cheap-and-nasty stainless steel Chinese knifes - even they are now useable. We tried the tomato test with the cheap carving knife - just pressed it flat. Ten strokes through the Ozitech and it slices it neatly and easily, and I went to on to carve the roast lamb with it later that evening. It might not hold an edge but with the Ozitech it's quickly restored with 3 or 4 strokes.

The Ozitech isn't in the bottom drawer. It sits next to the knife block on the bench ready to be used when required.

Customer Review: Turns already-sharp knives into razors, but doesn't mend dull knives.
Summary: 3 Stars

I have a set of knives that were in various states of "sharpness." The set came with a sharpening steel, but the steel alone couldn't seem to mend the more dull knives in the set. So here we are...

1) Turns "sharps" into "razors": I would describe this item as a good finishing sharpener; it will not mend your dull knives, but it will turn already-sharp knives into exceptionally sharp implements. In other words, I would recommend an electric sharpener if you're looking to mend extra-dull knives. In my experience, and contrary to some of the glowing reviews, I was not able to improve my dullest blades.

2) Compact design: this sharpener is a little larger than a BlackBerry or iPhone when folded up. Although it's not really part of the utility, I like the fact that it's not another large implement that inevitably clutters kitchen drawers or counters.

In summation, if you're here looking for a sharpener to repair ultra-dull knives, then I would not recommend this sharpener. This is not to say that this unit is a waste. It will turn already-sharp knives into razor-like culinary weapons!

Customer Review: Is cheap, works like it
Summary: 3 Stars

Tired of dull knives in the house and having been through no less than five other gadgets to sharpen them, I decided to give the Furi Ozitech a try.

On first use, I was underwhelmed by it's performance. The knives I set out to sharpen were probably too dull for this thing, so it might not have been precisely fair to judge it too harshly. Not willing to quit, I kept returning to the Furi in a zealous attempt to emulate the success others say they acheived with the thing. So, grinding away at it with my tired old knives (and evoking that GAHD awful screeching sound this thing makes), I finally had some success with a noticeably sharper knife on my fourth try. This success was further enhanced by steel-honing the knife after the shapening process.

In sum, this thing works IF you posess the right level of tenacity, and then, not in exactly spectacular fashion.

Customer Review: Sharpens Well, But Case Flaps Break
Summary: 3 Stars

This little knife sharpener is a neat item and could be a five-star product if they used the right kind of material for the flap hinges. The case is held shut by two flaps made with plastic/rubber hinges. One of the flaps broke off after using it about ten times - the store where I bought it gave me a replacement sharpener and I was very careful not to bend or stress the hinges too much - but even though, one of the flaps broke off the second sharpener after about 20 uses.

The hinges aren't made of the right material for repetitive opening and closing - they fatigue within the first few uses and then break off. Once the flaps break off, there is no way to secure the clam shell case other than with a rubber band.

If they fixed this design flaw and made a durable hinge, I would certainly buy another one, but at this point I couldn't recommend the product.
