Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Furi FUR626 Ozitech Diamond Fingers Pro Knife SharpenerCustomer Review: I like it! Summary: 5 Stars
I did some research for a simple, no nonsense sharpening tool for my kitchen knives. There are a lot of high-end sharpeners out there but I find that sometimes the simple things work almost as well. I'm not a chef or even a hobby cook (although I can cook if asked to). What I wanted was a simple sharpener for the kitchen that worked as well as the sharpeners found in the hunting and fishing catalogs but that was compact, reasonably priced, and worked well.
I ordered the Ozi and after being back ordered for a couple of weeks received it in the mail this afternoon. I took it out of the package, glanced at the instructions for opening and using it and in a couple of minutes was working on my first knife; a 30 year old Chicago Cutlery knife that hasn't been properly sharpened in years. It took a few minutes of work but the blade is now sharp as new. I then went through all the knives in our kitchen drawers that we use regularly. In less than 20 minutes they were all sharp. My wife just finished cooking a processed ham for Christmas dinner tomorrow; the kind with the skin that is pretty tough. I used one of our slicing knives that I knew from past experience would not work on this ham. TaDa! With the knife sharpened in the Ozi is sliced through with no problems. Playing card thin slices were easy. If it dulled at bit, I swiped it through the Ozi a couple of times and it cut through the skin with no problem.
I don't normally write reviews like this but was so impressed with the results that I thought I'd share them. Yes the case is not built like Fort Knox but it works. I find that the vertical side makes a nice guide to land the blade in the fingers every time. This tool does what it claims. I don't know how long the diamond dust will last on the fingers, but if it's anything like the diamond dust hand sharpener I bought to do my daughter's hockey skates, it will last a long time and save me $$'s.
Merry Christmas!
Customer Review: Really Cheap Case Summary: 3 Stars
Be really careful if you buy this product. The case is designed for beauty, not functionality. The sharpener came in a clamshell package, which I cut open. I then opened the sharpener the way it looked like it should open, and immediately broke the spine on the case. After my frustration subsided, I started looking at the packaging more closely and noticed a small note on the BACK of the package showing how to easily open the clamshell. Once I did that, the inside was full of warnings about how to open the case- warnings that if not followed, break the case and void the warranty.
Two things that really frustrated me:
1) If it is really super important to open the case in a certain way, wouldn't it have been smarter to put the warnings on the FRONT of the shipping package, and then on the outside of the product as well?
2) The case was designed to look cool, but once you throw the clamshell shipping package away with the warnings on it, anyone picking up the product to use it is going to break the case as I did. What a poor design: opening the case the way it looks like it should be open breaks it.
They have stuck a piece of paper inside the clamshell warning you that if you open the case wrong and break the spine, you void the lifetime warranty. Obviously, they have had many complaints about this. Unfortunately for me, I looked at the front of the package and took the product out before reading all the paperwork inside. I am very disappointed in the design of the case.
The sharpener did actually sharpen one of my high dollar knives after about 40 strokes (not the advertised four or five), so I will probably keep it due to its portability. If you buy this, just be aware that it won't be long before the poorly designed case breaks.
I would rate the sharpening capability as average to good, but the case as a design nightmare.
Customer Review: I was skeptical but now a fan Summary: 5 Stars
I have a wide variety of kitchen knives. For a decades I've sat down every month or so and sharpened them on my diamond block. Also made sure to use a steel often to keep their edges clean and straight.
I also have half a drawer full of random sharpening devices. Some tore the blades, some were too much effort compared to a block, some did nothing at all even with a lot of work.
The Furi is a great little gadget. I was skeptical but it was <$20 so I took the chance especially after all these great reviews.
This (cheaper) version is fairly small and compact. The flower petal design has the flaps peeling away from the sharpening fingers. As previously mentioned, I can see the smaller flaps eventually breaking off.
When you pull the knife across the fingers, there's just the right amount of abrasion. You can feel the 'grab' and even a slight grind of the knife on sharpener. 3 swipes and you're good. It doesn't give a super fine sharpened edge as using graduated grit stones. but it's impressively practical.
Good:
- Sharpens a standard knife really well, fast, and without skill.
- Grinding range is very good: from about .5 inch from the hilt to the very tip of the blade.
- Easy to use.
- Cheap.
- This is a good gift for friends that like to cook.
Notes:
- I wouldn't pull a thin or over-sharpened blade over this. You might tear the blade. For instance, my Mac santoku knife wouldn't do well with this.
- Wonder how long it will last with all of my sharpening. Might have to upgrade to the nicer version.
- Won't do serrated knifes.
Customer Review: Best price including shipping for this great sharpener Summary: 5 Stars
Checking shipping prices as well as purchase price, I chose Market Warehouse as the best deal. The Sharpener arrived within a week, even with UPS Standard delivery.
The sharpener itself is excellent. None of my knives ever gets completely dull so I didn't have to re-shape an edge. the Furi sharpener took out any hint of burrs with no more than 9 strokes. That was on a chef's knife that had just chopped 5 pounds of carrots, a half dozen onions (very fine), lord knows how many potatoes, a couple heads of cauliflower and a pile of parsley.
I finished the edge with a fine ceramic "steel" as diamond sharpeners like this leave the edge slightly rough. This is absolutely not a complaint. No sharpener can both quickly shape an edge and make it smooth. This step is probably not necessary but does produce a marginally finer edge. I'm a bit fanatic about knife care.
There is one down-side to this sharpener. It does leave slight scratches in the side of the blade if you push too hard on the knife while sharpening. I don't mind but some might.
The bubble packaging included adequate instructions for opening and using the sharpener, something you won't always see with sharpeners.
In reviews for this sharpener from other vendors, a couple of people have asked why this one is so much cheaper than the professional model from Furi. In a word, durability. I've used the pro version in a commercial kitchen and it's much more substantial than this, not that the average home cook will ever abuse the tool the way a underpaid dishwasher will. With reasonable care this should last years.
Customer Review: Beware, NOT same as original one! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this item to replace one I have owned and used for several years, and loved.
THIS is NOT the same as the original one , although it bears the same name and looks much like it.
Aparently there are at least TWO models (with differing numbers) of this item that are very similar but not of the same quality.
This one (#626) started coming apart on the very first use. The problem is the diamond coating on the fingers is not well adhered/bonded to the steel fingers and therefore as soon as I started using it The diamond coating started flaking off in thin flakes, leaving only the bare steel fingers underneath. the coating was simply poping right off of the steel fingers/blades, and by the time I had made a few strokes with my 8" chef's knife it had shed most of the diamond coating on two of the blades and was starting on a third one. I am an avid cook and have many fine knives and at that rete I would not have even made it a week before this item would have been totally useless.
Check out the other slightly more expensive model (#838) for sale here as I am going to order that one in hopes it is more like the one I already have (which has lasted for years and worked very well). This item is model #626 and is cheaply made. Avoid it! I have returned this one to purchase the "hopefully" better version. BEWARE!.
