I am very pleased and impressed with this piece of furniture. The poplar is nice looking and almost without blemish. Some of the boards may have a greenish hue- the manufacturer claims it will fade to light brown over time, or with 20-30 minutes in direct sunlight. The sunlight trick didn't really work for me. Doesn't matter though- 90% of the frame is hidden under the mattress and will never be seen. The arms and long pieces that are visible were all beautiful, so that's all that matters.
Assembly is SIMPLE. You open the two boxes and think, "Wow, that's a lot of parts..." but it could NOT be easier to put together. It took me less than 45 minutes. Instructions are excellent, everything is rock solid, and the operation is simple.
If you plan on finishing the frame, be prepared for a bigger project. Some light sanding with 220 is a good idea. I am finishing with Minwax Polyshades (stain/urethane combined); I also used the pre-stain conditioner recommended for soft or porous wood (agreed- poplar is not a "hardwood"- though definitely harder than pine). Manufacturer recommends a light color stain, so I went with classic oak in satin. You could stain everything before assembling, but for urethane I'm finding it much easier to have the back, seat, and frame each assembled and standing, rather than working one side at a time and then having to wait to flip. Again, much of the frame will be hidden, so I'm not wasting time on the slats or hidden surfaces. Two coats on all the visible surfaces so far, and it looks beautiful. I will probably put a third coat on the arms, at least (a quart of polyshades is 3 times more than you need- especially if using the conditioner).
Overall this is a well-designed, quality piece of furniture for the price.
