As Jan stated in a previous review, the Froth Au Lait can be a real bear while trying to make the perfect coffee drink. This machine, as designed, does make amazing froth. I am using this product with a Nespresso machine to make my own home grown latte's, while kicking an expensive Starbucks habit. I bought the "gourmet" version because I wanted the heat On/Off feature and the 2 different whip attachments (Froth & Sauce). The Amazon description for this unit says that the sauce whips are great for Latte's because it produces less froth and more milk.... well.... it does produce more milk, but basically no froth... just a lot of bubbles at the top, even when left on for the full cycle until auto shutoff. This may work well with chocolate milk for a Mocha drink, but not a latte.
So, I tried the froth whips next, with the suggested 1.5 ounces of 1% milk, and let her run the full cycle until auto shut off completed, pulled off the lid, and wow.... a full pitcher of froth with basically no milk left. Not good, unless you're making whipped cream.
As I sat frustrated looking at the machine, I thought how it would be nice to be somewhere in the middle with a good amount of milk left over and a nice milk froth on top. So I decided to try and use one of each whip at the same time. I snapped the sauce whip on the bottom, and the froth whip on top, and what do you know.... it worked! I poured in my 1.5 ounces of milk and hit the ON button. After a minute and a half, I added in my caramel sauce through the flavor cap, and let it run another 2 minutes (3 1/2 minutes in total), then shut off the power... PERFECT!! I was able to pour a 16 ounce cup about 3/4 full with just the flavored hot milk, add in my 2 shots of espresso, and top it off with a nice tasty foam that mounded over the top of the glass... Finally!!
All in all I am really liking the machine now, you definitely have to play with it to get your individual results, but it works really well for me now. I have found that stopping it before the auto shut off will still give you a nice hot drink that is about the right temperature to devour, and there is no need to over-heat it and then have to let it cool off anyway. The cleaning is also easy to me.... just rinse the pitcher out with hot water and scrub the metal bottom with a scour pad. Also, pop the 2 whips apart and clean in-between them... no big deal. I would easily give this product a 5 star review if they had a third whip attachment included for Latte's that was somewhere in between the froth/sauce whips.
