I agree with everything D. Ayars wrote in their review and I'm just adding my thoughts to add a bit more support for this great product.
I've used a FreshRoast Plus 8 roaster for the last four years and had to replace it because it's not able to roast my beans as well as it used to any more. I was interested in the SR 300 when it came out and read every review I could find for it. The Sweet Maria's review scared me away from this roaster for a while, but since I couldn't find another small roaster that was getting decent reviews and this one was relatively cheap, I decided to stay with the FreshRoast brand.
I just roasted my first three batches of beans (my week's supply) this morning and this is what I noticed:
- The roast time is very fast. The Plus 8 was taking the full ten minutes to get two scoops of beans past first crack. The SR 300 hit second crack for four scoops in 4.5 minutes.
- My roast was perfectly event without any additional stirring. The Sweet Maria's review had me worried about the fan, but watching the beans roast, I could see that they were moving around well. I'm thinking my beans are a little smaller than whatever they started with.
- The SR 300 is definitely less stable than the Plus 8. Not a big deal if you're not moving the machine a lot. Sometimes in the summer, I would carry my Plus 8 outside and roast on the porch. If I do that with the SR 300, I'll do it in two trips. It feels like the glass chamber can fall off the base if you're not too careful.
- The SR 300 feels a lot more sturdy than the Plus 8. I really like the lid/chaff collector design on this one. Certainly an improvement over the earlier model.
- The glass chamber seems to have a better design now too. I had to replace my Plus 8's chamber once when the base came off. Lately, I can't even get the chamber 'unstuck' from the Plus 8 machine and you can see the glass separate from its base when you try to force it. The SR 300 chamber doesn't seem to have those problems.
Overall, I'm thrilled with the SR 300. I expect it to last just as long, if not longer, than the Plus 8 I had for four years. For just over $100, you can't go wrong with this roaster.
Description of Fresh Roast SR 300
The Fresh Roast SR 300 coffee roaster is a larger version of the Plus 8. It will roast twice the capacity of the Plus 8 (4 scoops, 120 gm) with a digital time display. The maximum time to set the control is 9.9 minutes however with the great added features at any point during the roast sequence you can add 6 seconds every time you tap the button. Time can also be subtracted using the same method. The timer can be overridden by tapping the Cool button, the roaster will go into the Cool mode for 3 minutes.Coffee, Tea & Espresso
