Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Fred Cool Shooters Shot Glass MoldCustomer Review: Cool and Novel...But Messy Summary: 3 Stars
This is a fun and novel idea but has only limited use.
Obviously, ice melts and that poses some problems with serving, using and disposing of them. Drinking them is fun, but they get your fingers cold, slippery and wet. And if you've made it out of juice instead of water, you get cold, wet AND sticky. After using them you need a way to dispose of them quickly, because your guests are left holding an empty, cold, melting shot glass that they can't really set down anywhere or reuse (unless they have a glass to put it in and use as an ice cube).
One idea is to present a shot of liquor/liquid that complements what they're already drinking, so they can drop the ice shot glass (with or without the shot) into the cup. But even this requires careful coordination to make sure the cups are large enough and their glass isn't too full. The shot glasses are surprisingly heavy.
The last problem to mention is when the alcohol melts through the ice shot glass and starts spilling out the bottom. Sometimes this happens quickly, spilling the alcohol out onto the counter where you're pouring, or onto your hapless guest when you're handing it to them. I recommend using already-chilled alcohol to help slow that down, and to serve the filled shot glasses as quickly as possible.
Overall, these provide exactly what you expect from an ice shot glass. They're easy to make, look neat, offer some novelty but aren't good for more than a quick impression and a few minutes before melting becomes a reality.
Customer Review: Guess What All My Friends Are Getting For Christmas Summary: 5 Stars
I have purchased Fred Cool Products in the past to make ice. When I saw that they had a mold for Shot Glasses I knew I would give it a try. Ok making ice is pretty basic but these tips I have learned the hard way. First I start out using bottled water and I pour nice and slow so the mold is even. Make sure that you pour evenly and that you have a flat spot in the freezer so they freeze evenly. I than wait 6 hours. I get a plastic bag out and put the tray over it than I gently hit the tray with hammer to help the shooters come out and than I catch them in the bag (I had lots fall out and end up on the floor before i started catching them in a bag.
The glasses are a hit for all my friends but remember these are for shots not sipping. Pour a drink and do the shot unless you are using a chilled beverage your glass will start melting instantly. Also, remind your guests to disgard the glasses into the sink once they are done or once again you will have a mess. I have done glasses with coke and poured rum in, I have also kool-aid and poured vodka in. I encourage people to lick the glass and than do the shot.
These glasses solve the problem of what to do for big parties and limited shot glasses just start a week ahead you can have as many glasses as you need. Everyone will talk about it and it really adds a sense of fun to your parties.
Customer Review: As stated a million times already. A good novelty. Summary: 3 Stars
Pros:
-Works great as a shot glass and you can make many of them for a more entertaining evening.
-Plenty of room between the bottom of the ice glass and the bottom of the inside liquid to prevent leakage.
Cons:
-Good only for a couple of shots
-Can't really set them down anywhere because they'll get the surfaces wet. Careful where you guests leave em.
-When opening the box initially, this thing STUNK with chemicals. Even after rinsing several times, smell didn't go away. I suggest making the shot glasses and popping them out after no more than 24 hours in the freezer. Just pop em out and flip em upside down in the freezer so no dust get's in.
Other items:
-They are kinda hard to pop out each one out but that's not really something big enough to be a con unless your making 100's of these.
Customer Review: Fun novelty, but only for a few minutes Summary: 2 Stars
I first ran into the problem of not having enough flat surface space in my freezer (at the time) for this 25 square inch mold, so my first attempt had uneven bottoms. Plus, the shot glasses are a bit annoying to remove from the mold. And since you're making ICE, they'll be slippery to hold and useless at holding any liquid because they're melting very quickly. We couldn't decide which happened more often: dropping them or having leaking holes on the sides. Even worse, if you try with juice, then you'll add stickiness to the equation when it starts melting.
They're fun and easy to make, but they take forever to make and the novelty wears off too quickly. With only 4 molds, you'd either have to have buy multiple molds or spend a LONG time preparing enough shot glasses for larger parties.
Customer Review: misconceptions Summary: 5 Stars
Most people complain about how holes form or they get slippery as they melt or the bottoms don't stay flat. They are looking at in the wrong way. If you have a party coming up, plan ahead, make lots of shots and leave them out of the mold in the freezer.
Here's why: People will not be able to tell they are just ice at first glance. Get a friend or two to take a shot with you and then violently throw down and shatter the glasses on the ground. It is incredibly fun and hilarious as you confuse and mystify your guests. What I am trying to say is just don't expect to use them more than twice. And if you have to, make them out of hard candy or something else... which brings me to my next point, try some hard chocolate or anything you can think of, they will make your night.
