Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of FoodSaver Vac 300 Vacuum-Sealing Kit, WhiteCustomer Review: Great portion control tool Summary: 5 Stars
This is the low-end, no frills, stripped model of the Tilia family of vac-packing tools.
They all rely on the same principle for achieving vacuum inside the bag: a special, patented bag material where one side is lined with tiny channels which keep the food in but allow the built-in pump to suck the air out.
I bought this model on a whim and it stayed in the pantry unused for months until a few weeks ago when I started a diet which involves portion control. Many meals include 4 oz of lean protein such as grilled chicken breast, so I end up buying a large package of chicken breast at Costco, grill it all at once in my T-Fal grill (also purchased from Amazon), cube it, weigh 4 oz portions and vac pack them all into individual servings that go into the freezer. The frozen portions are very convenient to put in a lunch bag and microwave in the office (don't forget to puncture the bag first!)
For this type of usage I found the 6" rolls to be more convenient than the standard roll that comes with the machine because it requires less cutting.
Although the vacuum feature will only work with the patented bag material, you can also use the FoodSaver to reseal most types of plastic bags.
You should know that Tilia offers more expensive models with added bells and whistles you may like, such as built-in bag storage and sliding cutter, and an accessory port, bundled with accessories like special canisters; but if you only need basic vacuum packaging functionality you can't beat the price of the inexpensive Vac 300.
Customer Review: Best Item in My Kitchen Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely love and need this item. Mine is about 2 years old.
One time it wasn't sealing right and I discovered the rubber seal had compressed down into the top cover too much. I pulled it out a bit so it would make better contact with the bag and that solved the problem.
It's just me and my husband but I still cook for a family of 4. I hardly waste anything. Even a single item or small portion I seal and freeze. Sometimes I'll grab one or two small items out the freezer, pop it into a boiling pot of water for a few minutes and have a hot cooked meal that always taste as good as the day I cooked it. Sometimes my husband and I have a smorgesborg. When we evacuated for Hurricane Katrina I even took some packages of grilled salmon I had with me and fed the generous host who allowed us to stay with them.
The only word of caution I have is to be sure there is enough water to cover the pouch and don't cook it in a cast iron pot. It gets too hot and once my bag melted and the food spilled into the water. I use a telflon coated pot and have no problems.
This is great for anyone who works. I can come home and have a hot cooked meal in 20-30 minutes without all the effort. It's a great addition to any kitchen and a time and money saver.
Customer Review: Great Appliance Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this food saver vac 300. My husband and I were so anxious to receive it that we both looked for it to arrive daily. We now wait in line to use it. He loves to reseal in the freshness of cereal and potato chips. I went to work on meat items for the freezer. We both found the machine very easy to operate and work with. I have put up meatloaf, stuffed green peppers, hamburg patties, steaks, pork roast and Italian sausage for starters. They really look great in the packages. I have told my grown children that when they want to purchase gifts for us to get more vacloc rolls and they all agree that is a good idea as they never know what to buy us that we really can use. We can't say enough about this wonderfull machine and are very very pleased with it.
Customer Review: Great product, great price Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered the FoodSaver Vac 300 on the advice of my father. I am a college student and the no frills version was just what I needed (at a price I could afford).
I try to buy things like meat in bulk when I can to save on time and money. Now I can portion out the meat and feel comfortable that it will last in the freezer. I especially like to add the marinade to the bag before I seal it. Just fold a paper towel and place it at the top of the bag before you seal it to prevent the liquid from getting into the vac.
Also, the 8" rolls are the best deal and seem to be the most versatile size. You can make each bag as big or small as you need, no waste.
Customer Review: great when new, died too soon. Summary: 2 Stars
I really like the concept of this machine. I use it sporadically, mostly to store grain, flour, etc. However, while it worked fine initially it progressively has had more and more trouble pulling enough of a vacuum to seal (the sealing part of the machine is only activated when the vacuum reaches a certain point). Now it is totally useless. The rubber seals look to be in good condition and I don't recall any trauma that occurred, such as liquid being sucked into the machine, etc. I don't think that I even used the machine to seal more than 50 bags before it stopped working. What a disappointment!
