Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of FoodSaver Vac 1050 Vacuum-Sealing Kit, WhiteCustomer Review: It works Summary: 5 Stars
While I do not have this exact model, my Tilia vac system does what it says it does. I've had mine for about a year now and, yes, food really does stay fresher for much longer. For example, I buy large jars of sliced jalapeño peppers for use on nachos even though it takes time to get through the entire jar. The liquid always became cloudy and the pepper slices soft when I used the regular lid. Replacing the lid with the 5-inch jar cover has kept the liquid clear and the peppers fresh. I'm currently experimenting with something in the video - preparing lettuce for salads and placing it in one of the big cannisters and the salad "fixings" that thrive in moisture in a smaller one. Supposedly, the vegetables will stay fresh for a week, allowing me to have a quick salad after work instead of skipping it because it's too much effort. I use the bags with food that can handle being crushed (meat, coffee beans, some cheeses, etc.), but if it's soft or particularly juicy, the bags can be a problem. The best way to learn when to use them is to experiment. The bags are easy to wash in the dishwasher (I turn them inside-out), though for some reason they discolor. I've found the bags at Wal-Mart and K-Mart, so they are available if you need them immediately. The cannisters are easier to get through Amazon than through the Tilia website. They have other goodies that Amazon doesn't carry, but they aren't very good at direct-sales. Have fun!
Description of FoodSaver Vac 1050 Vacuum-Sealing Kit, WhiteIngenious and simple to operate, Tilia's FoodSaver system seals foodinside containers after vacuuming out air--and the oxygen that causes foods to spoil. That means food stays fresh longer than when it's merely refrigerated or frozen. Meat, for example, remains good in the freezer for about six months; frozen inside a vacuum package, it remains good for two to three years--and it doesn't suffer freezer burn, either. Fish, coffee, cheese, crackers, sugar, nuts, oils, and wine all stay fresh three to five times longer when stored in a vacuum, whether they're frozen, refrigerated, or at room temperature. Also, silverware and other metal items won't tarnish when stored in a vacuum-sealed bag. Like all FoodSaver machines, this one vacuums air from containers and seals bags with a simple one-touch operation. It has a manual sealing button for partial air removal and a sealing-time adjustment switch. The machine measures 15 by 5-1/2 by 4 inches, weighs 5 pounds, has a cord-storage compartment, and cleans easily with a damp, soapy cloth. It carries a one-year warranty against defects. The basic FoodSaver container is Tilia's three-layer VacLoc bag: it has two plastic layers and an outer nylon layer to keep moist foods (such as meat loaf or chocolate cake) moist, dry foods (such as brown sugar or flour) dry, and all foods from leaking odor. Included in this kit is one 11- by 10-inch roll for bagging, three quart size bags, and two gallon bags. For cooking, the bags can go directly into a microwave oven or boiling water. They're resealable, reusable, and dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack Editor's note: This product's performance will be affected when it is used at altitudes of 5000 feet above sea level and higher.
