Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of FoodSaver V3835 Vacuum Food Sealer with SmartSeal Technology, Silver/BlackCustomer Review: Great idea, poorly executed Summary: 2 Stars
We have used several of the FoodSaver products in the past, and this looked like a good idea. It's pretty, takes little counter space, easy to use ...
WRONG!! First, you MUST waste at least 3+ inches of bag space per use. It will not even start cycling until the bag is 1 1/2" past the sealing head (undoubtedly to make you buy more outrageously priced bag rolls). Unless you hold your mouth right, and the stars are properly aligned it may:
1) Try and fail to vacuum, but will try to seal anyway
2) Refuse to vacuum or seal (especially if you try to retract the back 1/8")
3) Do a partial vacuum and try to seal
When you seal the first end of the bag, if you retract the bag at all it the head will come down, then retract without sealing (you MUST waste the entire 1 1/2" of bag).
I finally gave up and started using my earlier version where you can SEE where the bag end must be to vacuum, and the sealing head is much closer to the vacuum end.
Again, this was a beautifully conceived and very poorly executed appliance.
Customer Review: The hose for the containers won't work Summary: 2 Stars
This is my 3rd FoodSaver vacuum sealer...actually my forth!
I upgraded to the newer V3840 because although I loved my old unit, the vacuum hose for the canisters stopped working.
I am now on my third replacement of the V3840 because of the hose ceasing to draw any vacuum at all.
I have always been EXTREMELY careful with it make absolutely sure I didn't pull it out too far. I live alone so I know nobody else has used it ever.
The rest of the unit works great but the hose has stopped working AGAIN, and this is my third V3840!
FoodSaver is great about replacing it, although they told me at my third replacement that this is it. I don't know if they will do anything about it now.
Since they give me the whole set of canister again at each replacement I have many of them. However I can't use a single one now.
I can't believe there isn't a recall on this unit. Something is wrong. Three units! Yes I have read the instructions and I follow them. This must be a manufacturing defect.
Customer Review: Poor implementation of a good idea Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this item from Costco when the one we had previously stopped sealing after many years of use.
The problem is trying to fix a problem that didn't exist. I do not need the machine to automatically close for me.
Mine stopped being able to seal the bag. I took it apart to find out why.
Here's how auto seal works. There's a motor inside that turns a gear wheel.
This pivots two arms, one on either side of the device.
The arms have hooks on them that grab ahold of the top of the machine, and pull the sealing mechanism into place.
Guess what they are made of? The cheapest plastic money can buy.
When I took it apart, I found the broken arm part.
My machine would never be able to seal.
Shame on the manufacturer for building in planned breakage.
No piece of plastic is going to hold up under such pressure.
Sad thing is, it wouldn't be hard to replace the part.
If you could buy it from them. They don't sell it
Again, shame on the manufacturer.
Customer Review: Redesign Ruins Great Product Summary: 1 Stars
I have a small Foodsaver - v2240 - I bought a few years ago and love it! I was so excited by the new model with it's upright design and stainless steal finish, I knew it would be the perfect wedding present for some friends.
I brought it over and we played with it for an hour and could barely get it to work. The problem is that the new machine is supposed to automatically detect when you've inserted a bag to start vacuuming or sealing. But getting it to recognize that there's a bag in there is like picking a lock. It rarely detected a bag, and often sealed a bag without properly vacuuming.
I'm getting my friends a less fancy model with the old style flip up lid. And I know they'll love it.
Amazing to see a company so completely ruin a great product. New design looks nice, but it doesn't work. The people at Foodsaver who a) signed off on the engineering, and b) shipped it to market without adequate testing are incompetent morons. This is a disastrous product and damaging to the brand.
Customer Review: Enormous bag waste Summary: 1 Stars
I read the reviews prior to purchasing but bought it anyway for its looks, which match the rest of my kitchen. Unfortunately despite the clean look of this machine, it is not worth the trouble caused by what FoodSaver calls "SmartSeal." You lose 5cm of bag space (essentially 6cm for solid foods) every time you seal a bag. Double that amount if you're making a bag from a roll (because of both ends). You can't cheat the sensor or it won't seal, let alone vacuum.
I returned the item and then purchased a non-SmartSeal FoodSaver (if you're looking for a stainless steel model, go for the 2490BC or 2860).
I doubt the motor nor the spring of the retractable canister hose will last a long time, but that won't matter considering you'll want to return it after a couple of seals thanks to the egregious bag waste. Those bags don't come cheap.
Poor, broken design sums up this model. If price is not an issue and you can afford vast quantities of bags, I suppose you can give it a go.
