Customer Review: The only one you need to have...

If you read all of the negative reviews on Foodsaver canisters, it's clear that, if you order it anyway, you're hoping that yours won't crack. Truly, if I were rating it on its performance (and using it as the manufacturer suggests) I would have to give it 1 star because, expensive as these are, they should last for years, not months. Foodsaver could remedy the problem of cracking if they would make them of glass.
My 5 star rating is based on using it to seal glass canning jars. I store my foods in glass jars, which I use this canister to seal, and this 3 1/4 qt. size will seal nearly any jar in my cupboard. It's a whole lot less expensive to purchase a carton of wide-mouth glass canning jars than it is to purchase these expensive plastic canisters. Another reviewer gave instructions for sealing jars with this method and I'll repeat it: You just fill the jar, place the lid and band on the jar and put it into the canister. Use the hose and the setting marked "canister" on the unit. After the canister seals, remove the hose and push the gray button on top of the canister to let the air out. The lid on the canning jar seals.
This 3 1/4 qt. size will seal nearly any size jar, from 4 oz. up to a half gallon. You can buy 6 half gallon, wide mouth jars at True-Value for around $10. I open the lids carefully and am able to re-seal them many times. (You can pop them open with your finger or the edge of a spoon.) Packages of replacement lids are cheap and readily available.
If you have a canister that won't hold its seal because of cracks, don't throw it away ... You can still use it to seal jars. If the cracks are so large that the canister won't even seal, try using a strong tape to cover the cracks.
I seal most of my spices in 4 oz. jars; Noodles, instant potatoes, flour, sugar, etc., in half gallon jars. You can't use this method as a substitute for canning foods (such as home-grown tomatoes that need a hot-water-bath canning method to destroy bacteria) but I can't think of anything that you would put into a Foodsaver canister that wouldn't keep just as well (or better) in a glass jar.
I love the Foodsaver unit and couldn't live without it. And the bags are fantastic, though expensive. I've had problems with ALL of the accessories and Foodsaver seems to be aware of these problems yet doesn't improve the products to remedy the problems. Nor do they back their products with an adequate guarantee. I wish that I had known that I could overcome all of the problems with their canisters, universal lids and jar sealers by purchasing only one canister ... I would have saved lots of money and frustration.
