Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of FoodSaver FSFRSH0055 FreshSaver Handheld Vacuum-Sealing SystemCustomer Review: Don't Believe The Doubters. Use It Right And It's Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I've read these reviews and some people love it while others don't. But the reasons why people don't like it vary. Some think it works as advertised but just isn't something they need. While others seem to think it doesn't work very well and is no better than a regular zipper bag or plastic wrap. My review is primarily aimed at correcting this last opinion because I can assure you that it does work at least as well as advertised and it's far better than any zipper bag or plastic wrap.
It sucks every bit of air out of a bag, tight up against the cheese, meat, whatever is in the bag. It sucks down into the holes of Swiss cheese as good as or better than the original packaging and just as well as my full sized Food Saver. You can't get all of the air out like this using a regular zipper bag or plastic wrap. I don't understand how anyone can say it's no better than a zipper bag or plastic wrap except that they must not be using theirs correctly.
I rated this item at 5 stars but if I could I would've given it 4.5 stars. It's not perfect. It does require that you pay attention and position the vacuum nozzle correctly on the bags and use the right pressure. It's not quite as idiot-proof as the full size heat seal food saver that I've had for several years. To me that is it's only downside, you have to pay closer attention to what you're doing. But it's not difficult. My wife, my 11 year old and 14 year old use it with great success and no problems. How do I define, "With great success and no problems"? Here's how...
Put a piece of cheese in the bag, zip it shut making sure it's fully sealed, (2-3 seconds), then put the nozzle over the vacuum port. Push the button and it starts to vacuum. Watch the bag to make sure it's getting smaller. If it's not shrinking then slightly reposition the angle of the nozzle or the pressure you're exerting on it. Make sure it's on a very flat surface. Don't push down too hard or it will flatten the bag too much and it won't allow the air to vacuum out. When you have it properly positioned just don't move it until all of the air is sucked out. That's it. Usually I position the nozzle correctly immediately or within 5 seconds. Occasionally it might take me twice that long. But it ALWAYS works as well as the full sized Food Saver unit that I have, sucking out the air until the bag is super tight against whatever is in the bag.
I have occasionally noticed that the bag didn't completely hold it's seal but it's rare that this happens. And every time there's either a small amount of food in the zipper track or when I slide my finger over the zipper it's not fully sealed, usually at the ends. Seal it again and it holds it's vacuum as long as I want it to.
I suspect that those who don't think it works well just aren't using it correctly. But come on, my kids each took about 1 or 2 minutes to figure it out with minimal instruction or supervision from me. Are you saying you can't make it work as well as an 11 year old boy? Bottom line is either this product works or it doesn't, right? It's not some hand crafted thing where every one is a little different from the rest of them. They're all identical so they all should work identically. Sure, no factory has a 100% success rate and there are bound to be the occasional defective unit or even defective bag/container. But I suspect that is very rare and it's obvious, (At least to me) that those having problems just aren't using it correctly.
Some have complained that the bags aren't durable enough. Yes, they aren't as heavy as the full sized Food Saver heat seal bags. But I haven't had any problem reusing mine quite a few times. With the heat seal bags you have to cut so much off of the bag every time you open it that it quickly gets too small to reuse if you open and close it only a few times. This isn't a problem with the Fresh Saver bags because you only zip and unzip it. I just rinse them out, turn them completely inside out and place them in my dishwasher. I make sure they are upright with the opening facing down. They come out perfectly cleaned and sanitized, ready to be reused. I usually try to put them on the top rack away from the hot drying element on the bottom of the dish washer. But when I do put them on the bottom rack occasionally they still come out fine. I definitely get more uses out of the Fresh Saver zipper bags than I do out of the Food Saver heat seal bags.
Also, some have complained that it's not interchangeable with the containers used with the full sized Food Saver. I thought this too until I recently read some negative reviews here and decided to experiment. It turns out that I got it to fully seal all containers that I have. I should point out that the hand held Fresh Saver unit's motor probably isn't as durable or heavy duty as the full sized Food Saver so using it for the larger containers might shorten it's life span. I don't know this for sure but it seems likely considering how much less expensive it is and the fact that the company only claims that it will suck the air out of the relatively small bags and containers. So, this is just to point out that it can be done. You may want to reserve the hand held Fresh Saver for the smaller containers and not the 2+ gallon ones that I have.
For the largest containers they have the knob on top that you can turn to different positions, "Open", Vacuum", "Closed". The rubber rimmed nozzle on the hand held Fresh Saver seals perfectly on the top of this knob. The full sized unit vacuums the air out and it stops automatically. Obviously the hand held unit doesn't stop automatically but it does change it's sound a bit as there is less and less air left in the container. Judging by how long it took the air to, "Whoosh" back into the container when I opened the knob I'd say it sucked out just as much air as the full sized Food Saver I have.
For the smaller containers they don't have the rotating knob on the top of the lid. Instead they only have a hole to vacuum the air out of and a button to push to release the seal. Because of how they are positioned you can't fit the nozzle of the hand held Fresh Saver properly to work. But...If you have the canning jar sealer adapter, (The regular wide mouthed one came with my full sized Food Saver) you can can use this as an adapter. The rubber nozzle of the Fresh Saver fits just fine over the top of the canning jar sealer and the rubber gasket on the canning jar sealer fits perfectly on top of the round, dome shaped tops of the smaller containers. It seals these smaller containers just as well as it seals the two Fresh Saver containers but you now have a more conveniently shaped container than the flat ones that are too shallow for some uses. I'll admit that it's not as convenient since you have to use that, "Adapter" but it's not hard to do. And even if you don't care to use it that way you can use the canning jar sealer for the purpose it was intended, vacuuming the air out of canning jars. They are far cheaper than any of the Food Saver or Fresh Saver containers and they come in a variety of sizes. They are easy to stack and they stay sealed. You don't need to buy a full sized Food Saver if all you want to do is seal canning jars. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you try this out.
I don't know what else there is to say in answer to the people who think this product isn't up to par. Either it works or it doesn't. If my family and I are able to vacuum out all of the air and keep the air out then I guess it works, right? If we are able to reuse the bags many times with the same great results then I guess the bags are reusable, right? If I was able to use the hand held Fresh Saver unit on containers designed for use with the full sized Food saver unit then I guess it's versatile, right? Any more questions?
