Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Feliway 48-Milliliter Plug-In Refills, 6 RefillsCustomer Review: I Wish I'd Bought Feliway A Long Time Ago... Summary: 5 Stars
To the Feliway product description information above, I would also add, "Aids in calming cats...who manage stressful chronic health conditions."
My 4yr. old neutered male cat manages several chronic health conditions, which at times create seemingly unrelated behavioral issues, when flare ups occur that jangle his nerves. When his IBD is not well controlled, my otherwise angelic cat becomes stressed out & does deadly things - chewing through power cords, consuming inedible objects, eating plants untouched for years, climbing to & jumping/falling from extremely high places aggravating his arthritis, & more. When he's not feeling well, acting-out is his way of externalizing his bad nerves & telling me, "I don't feel well, help me".
So I bought a Feliway Diffuser for him for his birthday a few weeks ago, & the change in my cat's behavior was noticeable within the first few hours after plugging it in. Initially, I noticed a personality change - sort of a mellowing effect, reflecting a more leveled out & increased general sense of well-being. I see less lethargy, & more interest in social interaction, his environment, & play. It's a subtle overall field effect, but his happiness & joy somehow seem happier. I've noticed I've had an easier time with giving him his regular medications & brushing his teeth. It's a synthetic feline facial pheromone, but I call it "the airborne feline prozac"... And without putting more chemicals into his system that don't belong in the body, & their problematic side effects. My cat seems to appreciate the general change in the overall atmosphere of his home, & occasionally, he even sleeps underneath the diffuser.
The benefits my cat experiences also pass on to me - because if he is less stressed & upset, & doing fewer life threatening things in reaction to his nerves - then I'm less stressed out as well. I'd rather buy him Feliway, than spend money on veterinary visits & additional medication to deal with new problems he creates when he's stressed. And there have been a lot of them.
Feliway contains an odorless oil by human standards, & it does not upset my cat's severe asthma or allergies, nor my own more moderate conditions. In fact, I am wondering that if he's less stressed out psychologically - & in turn physiologically - if there might even be less asthma & less digestive upset due to a reduction in the cycle of internalized stress. And if it improves his overall quality of life, I'd much rather buy him peace instead of more doctors...
I live in a small 1 person unit, & 1 diffuser does seem to cover the entire place. I unplug ours when the window is open, & plug it back in when it's closed, while I sleep or am away, & any time I think he might benefit from it. The plastic bottle can be unscrewed from the plug-in unit & recapped to preserve it until your next use. This may help to extend the 6 week life span recommended in the packaging information, we'll find out. I would also add that the diffuser gets warm, but not hot to the touch, & certaintly not hot enough to burn a hand or singe a whisker or fur. I have handled the diffuser many times during use, & I have no fear of allowing my cat to be directly near it.
The only negative aspect of this product so far as I can determine is how much you'll want to kick yourself for waiting to buy it for long as you did... As a pet store employee recently told me, "It is one of the few behavior mod products for cats on the market that actually does work." While there is no substitute for building & maintaining a solid, trusting relationship with your pet - or for seeking competent veterinary care - Feliway does seem like it could be a great adjunct to it.
Feliway gets 2 Thumbs & Paws Up from kitty & me. =^..^=
Customer Review: Great product but way too expensive Summary: 3 Stars
If you need this for a cat who is stressed, it is absolutely worth it. It is better to buy this than lose your cat or have the expense of vet bills. All diseases are stress-related so reducing stress is VERY important. However, the Feliway company is really gouging us with the price.
You can easily reduce your cats stress with exercise and petting. You can reduce spraying with your cat's own version of "Feliway." Just brush your cat by the corner of his mouth then rub that brush on areas where he marks. You have to do this daily for a couple weeks until kitty gets the picture. Keep in mind that exercise and attention are key. If you simply use facial hormones to block urination in certain areas, but don't reduce stress, he will simply mark in other areas. Exercise is key in releasing endorphins in people and animals. Just getting your cat to play will help immensely.Go Cat 36 Inch Sparkler
TO REDUCE STRESS in indoor kitties do this:
1) Excercise your kitty with wand toys, laser lights, string toys, etc for BRIEF periods (2-3 minutes). Cats are not endurance animals. They do best with brief exercise periods. If your cat moves very little due to laziness or obesity, and prefers to lay down as he plays, you can increase the time of exercise to 4-6 minutes.
2) Follow exercise with a treat or meal
3) After this, your kitty bathe himself and enjoy a nice nap.
Follow those steps 2-4 times daily for cats over 12 years, 3-8 times daily for cats 2-12 years old, and 5-10 times daily with kittens. These are just guidelines and as you can see they vary quite a bit. If your kitty is stressed, and doesn't have much to do all day long, play with him more often. If your cat is still stressed (marking territory or fighting with other cats), arrange for more frequent playtimes. Always get your vet's opinion on any exercise routine. Too much exercise can kill a cat. NEVER exercise your cat if he is open-mouth-breathing. This is not the same as "panting" in a dog. This usually means your playtime has gone on too long and kitty is having a hard time catching his breath which can be very dangerous.
Customer Review: worked for my terrified shelter cat Summary: 4 Stars
This stuff is no panacea and judging from first-hand experience, it acts best on the most extreme cases of fear. From what I understand, when the cat is frightened, parts of its brain quite literally shut down, preventing the animal from processing information and from making rational decisions. This was the case with my terrified shelter cat when I brought him home almost two years ago.
After struggling for several weeks to entice the poor thing to come out from behind the couch, where he'd be spending all of his waking hours (and more), I finally broke down and bought Feliway plug-ins (an expensive proposition for something one isn't sure will bring any result at all). I was ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED to see the cat peek out from his hiding place almost immediately and grow ever bolder with every passing day. The first two weeks just seemed like a miracle -- not only was the cat exploring, but he'd let me come close and TOUCH him -- and I almost reconciled myself to living with a ghost, behind-the-sofa cat.
However, I was a little disappointed to realize that fear was pretty much the only thing Feliway seems to work for. It doesn't stop the cat from clawing the sofa (I tried the spray for that). It doesn't make a friendly cat out of a reticent one -- mine still shuns all new visitors and refuses to be seen by strangers before a second or even a third visit. I would recommend observing one's cat's behavior for signs of positive change. Once improvement stops, it's probably time to discontinue using this product for a couple of weeks and see what happens. I ended up buying two sets of refills (in addition to the original two vials that came with the plug-in), but with the last two or three refill changes, didn't feel that they were making a difference. I figured that the cat has become as well adjusted as he is going to be and stopped there.
Customer Review: Seems to help...but don't expect miracles Summary: 4 Stars
Feliway Refill Pack-6 / B000CPAV3O
OK, we've got this cat who just does *not* stop talking. I don't know why - his sister is quiet as a lamb. And though it has been getting "worse" for the last two years (or maybe it just *seems* like it), it's not a new thing - he's almost six, and the vet thinks he's healthy as can be. He's just *really* fussy, whiny, anxious, and petty - he likes to follow the husband around the house hissing at him. Cute, but not conducive to headaches.
I really don't know that these Feliway packs work - we've gone through three bottles now. When I first bought them, I was praying for a miracle, like our little "problem child" would suddenly be silent, serene, content, and happy. Yeah, no such luck. However...every month and a half or so, he starts *really* ramping up the yowling, and I start saying, constantly, "Baby, what's WRONG?" and then I go check the calendar and it's been over a month since I plugged in the last new Feliway bottle. And, sure enough, the darn thing is empty. So I go another week or two and finally in desperation I order another refill, and then our baby seems to calm down...comparatively...until the bottle is emptied and we go through this cycle again.
So, basically, I think this is helping, but I don't have a lot of before-and-after scientific data to go on. The cat has noisy days and less-noisy days, and it SEEMS like when the Feliway runs out, we get treated to a whole string of noisy days, and when the Feliway comes fresh in the mail, things quiet down a bit. Since I really do feel like these are helping, I'm buying more, but I wanted to share my story - as far as I can tell, Feliway *does* help, but don't expect a miracle.

Customer Review: Feliway and Comfort Zone refills are interchangeable Summary: 4 Stars
After lots of research, last year I purchased Farnam Comfort Zone Plug-In Diffuser with Feliway, 48 Milliliters for my cat's urine marking habit. I'd say that this pheromone has been about 85%-90% effective in preventing his problem. Up until recently I've been buying this refill Farnam Comfort Zone Feliway 48-Milliliter Refill Bottle. When I was researching last year, I read that there was a problem with these refills: Feliway Plug-In Refill, 48 Milliliters so I didn't buy this one. I don't even remember what the problem was; I do remember it was somewhat minor. The prices have been slowly increasing, so I decided to try the Feliway refill because it was less expensive. I didn't have any trouble with it, so I purchased the Feliway 48-Milliliter Plug-In Refills, 6 Refills to save even more money.
Feliway Plug-In Refill, 48 Milliliters & Farnam Comfort Zone Feliway 48-Milliliter Refill Bottle are interchangeable; either one will work in the diffuser. In my experience, they are both equally effective. Both refills last a little over a month.
