Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Farberware Clear Benefits 14-Piece Cookware Set, BlackCustomer Review: From a happy 3-year owner Summary: 5 Stars
A little background (you can skip if you want): my parents bought this for me when I moved out of the college dorms and into my first 'real' apartment. It was nice, but of course being the college student I didn't do a lot of cooking anyways, so mostly they sat dormant in my cupboard, hardly used. Then, I graduated from college and into my first REAL apartment (as in, one without roommates). Of course, Farberware came with me. I still have the same set, and although I do not have any of the same issues the other reviewers are having (paint peeling off, non-stick coming off?!), I am not sure if Farberware has changed the way they make these pots and pans in the past three years or whatnot, but my review will still stay the same.
My brother recently received these as well when he moved out of the house a few weeks ago (a 19 year old male will probably use it a lot less than I did...maybe I'll tell him to get on here and review if/when they start to get horrible!)
PROS --
1. Since this is my only set of cookware, I haven't had any problems using it on an almost-daily basis (I'm single, gimme a break!). The non-stick part of each pot is still in tact, and nothing has ever 'scrapped off' info my food.
2. Normally I regarded cooking as some strange thing people did in a faraway land where Hot Pockets had not yet been invented. However, I'm finding that through using these pots and pans (and watching the Food Network channel on how to properly boil an egg), I find that these are great for the beginner cook, who doesn't need an overly complex set which would just confuse and overwhelm them anyways.
3. Hold up great in the dishwasher/soaking in the sink - If you have a bit of caked-on food (eggs, for example, are an evil one at becoming crusty), these are perfectly safe to soak for a little while. Being single (again, so sue me), I sometimes let the dirty dishes soak for a few minutes...hours...max 24 hours, but still they get clean and nothing is harmed as far as the non-stick goes (it doesn't get soft and peel off or anything).
CONS --
1. Like many, MANY other reviewers have stated, the paint on the bottom of each of the pots has started flaking off (or, now, is completely worn off). I suspect that this would happen eventually to all pots and pans, since the bottom of the pot is in direct contact with the extremely hot electric coil of my stove, the black paint has worn off over the years (just the bottom of the pan, however, the black paint on the sides has remained intact).
2. Cheap plastic 'free cookware'. This set comes with extremely flimsy plastic cookware that you should just throw away when you first receive these pots and pants. The spatula is probably the worst, I just use it as a last-resort stirring 'spoon' if I have run out of everything else. Buy a separate plastic cookware set you cheapo!
And I don't think this is a con per-se, however, it is something to keep in mind. Farberware boasts clearly on the side of the box that all of the lids are 'interchangeable', but they forgot to mention "EXCEPT FOR ONE". The largest skillet does NOT have a lid. Yes, I've tried using the lid for the largest pot, but it does not fit. The lid for the largest pot fits the smaller of the two skillets, but nothing fits the largest one.
No big deal, just remember to buy a large lid for the thing when you get it, or like me I bought a huge skillet with a lid and just use the 'supersize lid' to cover the large skillet of this set.
Conclusion: Who is this set good for? Starter cooks (buy a large lid for the large skillet, as it doesn't come with one, and a separate plastic cookware set, as this one is flimsy). College Students (works well as-is). I can't speak for anyone else who has used this set, but it has worked wonders for me!
Description of Farberware Clear Benefits 14-Piece Cookware Set, Black14-Piece Clear Benefits set includes 1-quart saucepan w/lid, 1.5-quart saucepan w/lid, 2-quart saucepan w/lid, 4.5-quart saucepot w/lid, 9-inches nonstick skillet, 10.5-inch nonstick skillet, 4 kitchen tools. This budget-priced cookware set is perfect for college students or young couples who are setting up a first kitchen. The 14-piece set has everything necessary for the basic meals attempted by entry-level cooks (pasta and sauce, eggs, and anything pre-packaged). The pans in the set include four covered saucepans in 1-, 1-1/2-, 2-, and 4-1/2-quart sizes and two nonstick skillets in 9- and 10-1/2-inch sizes. The pans are accompanied by four kitchen tools: a slotted spatula, a ladle, a slotted spoon, and a pasta fork. Made of aluminum, which is an excellent conductor of heat, these pans warm up through the bottoms and sides for even cooking. A nonstick coating on the interior and exterior of the pan reduces the need to cook with extra fats and makes cleanup fast and easy. Pans have durable, riveted phenolic handles that stay cool on the stovetop and see-through glass lids for keeping an eye on supper as it cooks. The 14-piece cookware set is oven-safe up to 350 degrees F and is dishwasher safe. --Cristina Vaamonde
