Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Farberware 50123 Classic Tiburon 2-1/2-Quart Whistling Stainless-Steel TeakettleCustomer Review: Okay for the money, slightly flimsy Summary: 3 Stars
Received this as a gift. An entirely serviceable kettle -- getting water hot really isn't that difficult a job. The water does indeed get hot, then it whistles, then you make your tea and stop thinking about it. So in that context, I can mainly go on little things. This kettle is stamped from very thin sheet metal, so it feels a little flimsy in the hand; it can be felt deforming a bit when carrying it half-full of water. The lid's handle frequently comes unscrewed. Okay, so you just have to twist it back down, but a few minutes materials selection could have avoided it. The main handle, synthetic or not, does get slightly hotter than could be wished on a gas stove -- a bit more than is comfortable. One good point: the lid's vertical flanges are angled inward, and sit inside a concave opening in the kettle -- that is, the lid fits inside its opening rather than around it. Thus condensation on the lid doesn't drip out when pouring. The lid's opening is large enough to fit my hand inside for cleaning, but barely, and I have small hands. Those with larger hands might have difficulty.
Customer Review: Big disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this as a replacement for a 25-year-old Revere Ware kettle that had finally worn out. I read, literally, hundreds of reviews on dozens of kettles to find something that could live up to my old one (reviews for the modern day version of my old one didn't sound good). I love the look of this kettle, but upon FIRST use, the entire whistle mechanism fell out of the spout into the cup as I was pouring. In addition, quite a bit of some kind of black residue came out with the water. Ironically, it was the whistle mechanism that had broken on my old one. I am extraordinarily disappointed in this purchase, especially since I have to go back to the drawing board again. I would have been happy to pay twice as much for a good kettle, but the reviews for more expensive kettles weren't any better than for cheaper ones. I was really prepared to love this, but I won't try another Farberware. Very poor quality control. I will say that Amazon's return policy and service is brilliant, and I will try buying another brand through them.
Customer Review: classic it is! Summary: 4 Stars
I've never owned a tea kettle. Even as a kid, there wasn't one in the house. So I wasn't quite sure what I was looking for in a tea kettle. I decided what I'd like is a classic, clean look that is durable. Unlike other people, I didn't have to go through 10 different kettles to find it! This is it! well priced, very clean and simple. No bells, but it sure does whistle...quite loud the longer you let it go, which is good because I seem to forget I turned it on sometimes.
It fits perfectly over the gas burner and the handle never gets hot. Easy to fill and empty. The only thing I wondered is why you have to push the little lever down to pour your tea water instead of flipping it up. Only thing I found a little unnatural.
One thing I was told helps to keep it looking nice is to take it off the stove top whenever we're cooking, so that it doesnt get splattered with food and grease.
Customer Review: Good kettle, small filler hole Summary: 4 Stars
It is a decent kettle:
- boils a quart of water in under seven minutes on the small coil of my electric range
- whistle sounds like a whistle initially, but the *whistling_sound* seems to run out of steam (even though I haven't turned off the range and plenty of steam is coming out!) - "phhhhhhtt"!!
- the handle is cool to touch, and the natural trigger action closes the spout (you'd think it opens, but no...)
- water stays steaming hot 15-20 minutes after removing the kettle from the range (close the spout!)
- inexpensive!
But: I have somewhat large hands, one of which almost got stuck inside the kettle, due to the small (~3" diameter) filler hole! I either rinse it out with soap water or just plain water (since I don't boil anything else other than water...)
Recommended... for people with small hands or not-picky-about-scrub-cleaning :-)
Customer Review: Tea Kettle Summary: 4 Stars
I love the way this tea kettle looks, but feel that I should honestly tell you I read a review saying it made a pleasant whistling noise. I have to disagree. The second this baby starts singing, I RUN to the stove to take it off the burner and save my eardrums from the aggrevation of having to listen to a pretty awful sound. That being said, it is beautiful, sturdy, easy to pour and easy to fill, and I would buy it again. I wish you could test drive the sound of tea kettles.. I am a musician, so maybe I have sensitive ears? Having no other tea kettle noises to compare this to, I do not think I could do any better randomly buying a different kettle for the sound quality alone. Of course, I pour my hot water into my corelle callaway thermos, and it stays hot up to 24 hours... it's a wonderfully stylish way to serve tea. I love the old fashioned look of this kettle. Happy tea time!
