Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Fagor Splendid 6-Quart Pressure CookerCustomer Review: Actual Instructions for THIS model of pressure cooker Summary: 4 Stars
I only rate this product a 4 because the "instruction manual" is a joke. Fagor gives you ONE generic manual that applies to all their models, even if it's wildly inappropriate for this one. For example "the pressure valve will rise, showing you the increase in pressure." Guess what? No pressure "valve" visible on this one.
Here's the skinny: there is a dial on the lid with 3 settings. One is a circle with a line through it. That is for replacing parts, and it won't turn to that setting (apparently you have to do something special to get there). Then there is a setting that looks like a steam cloud. That is for RELEASING pressure. The final setting looks like a closed pot. Turn it to the pot to bring the thing up to pressure. Turn it to the cloud to release pressure.
There is a yellow button on the handle. When the button pops up, the pot is at pressure. That's your magic moment. Recipes have various ways of describing when the pot is at pressure -- for this model, you care about that little yellow button, not about steam amount or whistling or agitation. You can turn the heat fairly low and leave it at pressure. I think that's it. Made me crazy trying to figure this out.
Customer Review: Handle deformed Summary: 2 Stars
This is a great pressure cooker, but probably not intended for gas ranges. It locking mechanism is on the plastic handle, near the rim. If you don't place it properly at the center of your burner, flame may go up to damage the handle. This was what happened to me. It was working great for about 6 months of regular use. Then, it failed to hold pressure. I found that a purple switch in the handle was deformed due to high heat.
I ordered a new handle from fagroamerica.com, for $15 + shipping, about one third the price of a new cooker. The parts came without instructions. It took me a while to figure out how to put together the 12 pieces. Luckily, I did it right and my fagro is working well again. I was a bit nervous when I tried the replacement puzzle, as I knew that any mistake could lead to a big mess in the kitchen.
Now that I have learned my lesson, I make sure that that my fagro always properly sits at the center of the burner, and that I don't use high flames. Hopefully the repair would last longer.
You can say that my problem was caused by user errors. If you have an electric burner, you probably won't have the same problem.
Customer Review: Great pressure cooker, not so great manufacturer. Summary: 4 Stars
This Fagor pressure cookder is excellent. I have had time now to use it repeatedly and am thoroughly satisfied with its construction, features, and performance. As soon as I got it I contacted Fagor to buy fitted accessories: the steamer, the drop-in pot on a tripod, and the timer they advertise. The timer, which cost $10, was the only disappointment. It is made of stainless, but is poorly designed. It has a belt clip on the back with a glued-in magnet. The clip prevents the timer from fitting firmly against a surface, and any touch to it will cause it to fall off. As if this weren't bad enough, it only worked once. The second time I tried to use it, I discovered that the alarm sound it makes had all but disappeared. It could be heard only within about a foot of it. I contacted Fagor at once to get a credit or refund, and was told that I could be given only a replacement -- which I refused. Why replace junk with junk? So -- buy, use and enjoy the cooker, and the appliances. But don't bother with their junky timer. Go to your nearest discount store and buy a far better one for far less money.
Customer Review: just get it! Summary: 5 Stars
If you like to cook soups, you neeeed this.
If you like to cook base broths, A must have.
If you like fork-shredded meat (pot roast, burrito filling, etc.) There is really no other way to do it right.
You can cook rice in about 10 min. (5 to heat, 5 to cook..done!)
You can cook potato, squash, pumpkin, etc in about 15 min. incl. heating.
If you don't cook these things, it may not be as useful.
I have a Rapida, which is supposed to base model. Had it for 7 years. Just replacing gasket now! These Fagor models are heavy duty and built to last. absolutely no problems except you can burn food onto the bottom if too hot.Impress my wife all the time with it. Save shrimp, crab shells, fish leftovers in freezer. when you get enough make broth. use it in rice in place of water or as a base for white sauce. ditto with the holiday turkey. throw half of the remains in and make low-salt broth. pea soup with ham is great in 20 minutes from start.
Can't say enough about how much I like these.
Customer Review: Beware International Purchasers Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this pressure cooker under the assumption that it was made in Spain, but when it was delivered, I found it had been manufactured in China. I specifically did not want a product made in China due to concerns over product quality and felt that this fact was misrepresented to consumers.
In addition, when I received this product from Macy's Department Store in New York, I discovered that the $20.00 gasket was clearly defective - It looked like it had been cut with a knife - and this rendered the pressure cooker unsafe and unusable. Macy's also has a policy of not providing direct redress of such problems to Amazon's customers, which I feel leaves us extremely vulnerable to being used as a dumping ground for defective products that cannot be sold to in-store customers.
I am reasonably satisfied with the pressure cooker's performance, but am not happy with the customer service side of this transaction and want to make other consumers aware of the problems I've encountered.
