Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Fagor Splendid 6-Quart Pressure Cooker

Customer Review: Its all true!
Summary: 5 Stars

This evening I tried out my cooker, trepidatiously. I made an oso buco recipe. I wasn't able to find veal shanks, so I opted to try beef shanks--tough as boot leather--instead.
The beef turned out quite tender. What was amazing was the sauce that formed in the pan along with the meat. Thick, rich and flavorful. And lots of it!

Everything everyone has written is true: a delight to behold, easy to use, easy to know when the cooker has reached pressure, easy to clean, designed with great care and attention to detail.
If you get one, consider the following two accessories:
1. simple, cheap kitchen timer, and 2. "Cooking Under Pressure" by Lorna Sass. Once you get the pressure up, with the timer you can track how long, and remove from the heatly promptly. Lorna Sass's book is written so gently you can imagine her standing behind you, and heaping on encouragement.

One more thing. We have entered an era where we must be concerned with how much energy we use.Pressure cookers requires very little fuel. For this very reason they are very popular in the third world and other places where cooking fuel is scarce and expensive. If nothing else, with the help of a pressure cooker, we can cook our way to energy independence!
2008 Update: I've been using the cooker to prepare a whole new group of foods (Cauliflower head 4 minutes, Sweet potatoes 15 minutes, fabulous rice pudding with cardamom, and amazing chile verde). Even my very picky and gunshy spouse appreciates what comes forth from the pressure cooker. We're eating healthier, and using less gas, too! I still love my fagor splendid, and unhesitatingly highly recommend to anyone, even to the most nervous nellie!

Customer Review: a needed staple in any kitchen
Summary: 5 Stars

Just bought this and love it to death!! I grew up watching my mother use her Presto pressure cooker, then had my own all these years until it sort of died, boy, am I glad it did!! My old one had that 'rocking and rollin' toggle like button on top and oh so noisy!, but it made quick meals. I've been without a p.c. now for about 3 months, and certain dishes, like smoked ham hocks, or fresh kielbasa I wouldn't even try to make until I purchased a new one. Bought this and made my hocks in about 35 min...so soft and juicy, ready to be added to a bean soup or some greens. You can make the best falling-off-the-bone-ribs using the p.c. Cook ribs for about 20 min, then finish in a 275 oven with your barbeque sauce for about 30 min....yumm!! Corned beef brisket comes out tender and juicy after about 35 min, 10 or 11 min for potatoes for your potato salad and it's full flavored, you don't leave all the vitamins and flavor in the water to be thrown out. This appliance is amazingly quiet, never expected that, and clean up is a breeze too. I like how easily the rubber gasket comes out and goes back in for cleaning. If you take the 3 min to clean the pot right away, it's time well spent because everything cleans right up, it you wait, you may have to soak and take a lot longer. Fagor company seems amazing, a 10 yr warranty, a DVD showcasing 2 chefs making 4 different recipes, then those recipes are listed with full directions in another area.
A separate book with 50 recipes and good size book with just info on your new product.
I'm very pleased, with the cooker, with the company too, it's not scary cooking with this pressure cooker at all, go ahead and purchase, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Review: BLOWOUT prevention: Remove & Clean Valve Parts
Summary: 4 Stars

A huge, loud blast of steam from the right-hand side of my pressure cooker scared me. The heat of the steam blast ruined the $155 control panel of my stove, so now I aim the blow-out position elsewhere.

Analysis revealed a cut-away in the lid metal supporting most of the gasket. At the cut-away the gasket ripped as a safety feature. Rotating the partially torn area away from the cut-away restored gasket function.

Suspecting froth from cooking a high level of pinto beans had clogged the valve, I removed and cleaned the vertically sliding surfaces of the valve assembly where most residue had accumulated.

Removing the valve was slightly tricky. I gently lifted the valve to rotate to the steam release position. After cleaning, I installed the valve in the removal position, and then rotated to a pressure position to secure the valve.

If the handle interlock gives me problems, I might try to clean the relevant internal parts.

I blame myself for 1. Cooking frothing foods with the water level above half full; 2. Not thinking ahead and making allowances for what could go wrong with a high energy system.

Perhaps other reported problems are also due to improper use. For example, leaks due to gasket aging, metal dings mating the gasket, or storing the gasket not relaxed i.e. compressed via the lid clamped to the pot.

I like and continue to use my Fagor whose bottom is stamped with pressure and volume 1.05 Bar, 0.55 Bar, 6 L. Nominally: 15 & 8 psi & 6 quarts.

Customer Review: Sorry company
Summary: 1 Stars

Cannot give any kudos to Fagor for sturdiness or support for this product and would rate a zero if it were possible. Had a 'Splendid' model cooker that gave performance problems with the upper handle not performing well and after warranty period had expired, discovered that the pressure sensing button was defective. Could find no way to get just the button, which should have been a 50 cent item, and had to order a complete upper handle assembly to get the button ($26 including shipping and their 800 number never responds). After receiving the new handle with all it's parts, when taking the shipping tape off of the handle, the locking slider fell off. It was broken before being packed and taped to the handle to keep it there until delivered. Called the Fagor 800 number and got a message to leave a name and number and they would call me back within 48 Hrs. After 4 days with no call back, sent them an email through their web site explaining the problem and requesting a new part. Now 1 week later and no call back, no email answer and no replacement part.

I had seen reviews describing Fagor's lack of support over things like this and didn't believe that a company this big could be so lacking in support of their customer base. I've had enough of this company and am switching to Magafesa or an American manufacturer to see if their support is any better. It certainly can't be any worse!!!

Customer Review: Outstanding Value: Superbly made, truly functional
Summary: 5 Stars

I read many reviews about purchasing a pressure cooker and was taken by the great reviews of the Fagor brand. So, intending just to go look at them my wife and I went to Dillards. While we were there we saw the Fagor Splendid 2 in 1. It has an 8qt and 4qt pots with a glass lid, pressure lid, trivet and steamer basket. The pots are beautiful! Polished inside and out, with a quality heft to their stainless steel bodies. Heck, for a regular pot you could pay [...] for quality this nice; yet, Dillards was selling the complete set for [...]. We decided on the spot and took it home.

I immediately broke out 6 fresh corn cobs, shucked them and threw them in the 8qt pot followed by about 21/2 pounds of peeled potatoes. 7 minutes later, out they came! Perfect! My wife said that the corn was fantastic-so tender and colorful. The potatoes were wonderful also.

Here in Texas, the last thing I wanted to do was steam up the kitchen while cooking the corn. This pressure cooker barely vented steam, was very quiet, and came up to pressure so quickly.

I can honestly say, that if you choose this brand, you will be delighted. As I mentioned earlier, the quality of the pots is in the league of high end manufacturers. The parts are easy to order and Fagor has a great web site [...].

Oh, and it is warranteed for 10 Years, and the pots are made in...Spain!!
