Customer Review: Something that actually lives up to the promise!

I bought this product in February after thinking about buying a slow cooker for years. Actually, about 8 years ago I bought a cheap Crock Pot and after only a few uses I discovered the cord, at the point where it entered the unit, had turned black and melted! I wanted to replace it but the company wanted me to pay for shipping both ways which would have cost almost as much as the unit, so its been sitting in my garage ever since. However, I know a lot of people who use slow cookers and love them so I've toyed with getting a newer, better one all these years.
I came upon the Fagor by accident in an ad and was intrigued - I also have a stovetop pressure cooker I NEVER use, and my cousin has been raving about her rice cooker, so finding one unit that does all three seemed like a miracle.
I've had it now about 4 months and love it as much now as I did from the beginning.
My thoughts: if you know you will use it as a slow cooker almost exclusively, I wouldn't recommend this one for the following reasons - the top is not glass so you can't peak on the meal while cooking and there isn't a faster cooking option so you really really need to be ready to put the meal in at the crack of dawn in order to have it ready for dinner. If however, you actually like the idea of cooking rice in it but wouldn't have gone out to buy a separate rice cooker, you will love this. In fact, i would recommend this to anyone looking to buy a rice cooker as they will get the added bonus of the slow cooker and pressure cookers.
i find that if I don't start my stew until mid morning, I can use the pressure cooker setting right before dinner for 10 minutes and the meal is ready - not tough and not goopy but very good, so I can get around the fact that there isn't a higher cooking power for the slow cooker. I just don't know if I will be successful everytime as one never really knows how long to pressure cook it, so that is a small negative.
We've discovered that we love cooking white rice in this cooker and it comes out much fluffier than it does in the microwave or on the stovetop. I also put in packaged rice and find it cooks more quickly as well so we are really happy with this.
There is a browning setting which works pretty well and I've used that often when before slow cooking meat and have been happy with the result.
We also use the pressure cooker often - when we want to make mashed potatoes or steam some broccoli quickly - the unit sits on my counter so I don't need to get down a separate hardly used stove top pressure cooker when I want boiled potatoes stat, and I'm never afraid that the unit will blow up, which I always was with my stove top unit (I know that is probably highly unlikely, but then so was having the cord melt on my original crock pot....)
I've made some great meals with the Fagor and because it is so flexible - I've been able to use it for many different recipes - it isn't unattractive, it's versatile and holds a good deal of food.
My only complaints are that I wish the top were glass so you could see how the food looks when almost done (although perhaps that isn't possible for pressure cookers?) and they could have made it easier to get the insert out. The handles are tiny and it isn't easy to remove when food is in there. It can always be set on the table and the meal served directly from it but I usually prefer to put it into a serving bowl and would rather remove the insert. I also wouldn't mind if it were a bit wider and less deep, more slow cooker shaped/less rice cooker shaped, but that is minor.
Clean up is extremely easy - the insert is non stick and needs a quick swipe to get clean. I do find that sometimes the pressure fails to build up when you are using the unit and so don't plug in and walk away until you see the timer counting down. After some frustration with meals that were ready before the rice I"ve started following the manufacturer's suggestion to clean out quickly the pressure knob before I use it each time and I also make sure the rubber gasket is pressed down all around before closing the lid. Between the two things I find the pressure usually works the first time and if it doesn't I just repress on the gasket (do this all around the lid) and it then works. A tiny inconvenience but probably an issue with most if not all pressure cookers. Rice is starchy so clogs up the holes
All in all I am extremely happy with this item, feel it was totally worth the price and recommend it to anyone except as mentioned, those people who really only want to slow cook in it, in which case I'd say forget this and buy a good slow cooker instead.
