Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Factory-Reconditioned Cuisinart ICE-20FR Automatic Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker, WhiteCustomer Review: This is a MUST BUY! Summary: 5 Stars
I was hesitant about buying this item because of the rising population of "trendy" unused small appliances in my kitchen. I decided to take the plunge after seeing this sort of product used on the "Iron Chef" TV show. I couldn't believe that fabulous ice cream dishes worthy of a Japanese cooking contest could be created inside of 1 hour. I bought it that day! I put the freezing bowl in the freezer immediately after opening the box and blended up two cans of peach slices and a cup of plain yogurt. When the bowl was frozen (5 hrs) I dumped that stuff in and Voila'!! Ice cream with dinner! My kids think I'm the greatest and I sneaked calcium into their diet with no protests. If you have any doubts, don't. (one more thing: I didn't think the freezer space issue was a big deal, I put a bag of frozen peas inside the bowl to save space)
Customer Review: and frapuccino, too! Summary: 5 Stars
This thing rox so hard. It's really nicely designed to be easy to clean, which is clearly the most important part. The freezer bucket stays ridiculously cold, which is always the part that makes me nervous about these things. What's great is that you don't have to just make ice cream, but you can throw anything in there--root beer, sprite, juice, lemonade--and make a slushy in just a few minutes. Good for parties and all that. But my favorite thing to do is to brew up a pot of coffee or espresso before bed, put it in the fridge, then in the morning toss it in with some delicious organic milk and some sugar, maybe a little vanilla, nutmeg, whatever, and in a couple minutes you have a frapuccino the likes of which you would have paid $5 for at Starbucks. Plus you can make it your way. Wait for a good deal, and it's a thing worth having around.
Customer Review: Luvin' it! An especially good appliance for dairy intolerants! Summary: 5 Stars
My first trial - the mix didn't freeze. But then, after putting the bowl in a colder freezer and making sure the ingredients were all VERY cold, I've had wonderful results.
My husband and I are both dairy intolerant and I have found that I can use coconut milk in place of milk and cream in recipes (one website said that this would work with any recipes). So far I have made coconut sorbet and banana ice cream using coconut milk (not the LITE). It's wonderful! I'm looking to buy coconut milk by the case, and converting all the ice cream recipes.
Also made a stunning strawberry/limeade sorbet. Looking forward to using the fresh fruit we are starting to harvest here in the San Joaquin Valley for all kinds of treats.
My bowl now stays in the freezer until I'm ready to use it.
Customer Review: Excellent for making LOW CARB ice cream!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I was a bit hesitant about purchasing a reconditioned unit, but after speaking with my friend I decided to take the plunge. She has the same unit which she had gotten brand new and uses it all the time. This is wonderful for people who follow a low carb way of eating as you can adjust the ingredients for your liking. We use the traditional vanilla recipe in the front of the book, substituting light cream for the milk and splenda for the sugar. We chopped up low carb chocolate bars and sliced up some fresh strawberries, and made some WONDERFUL homemade, vanilla, chocolate chip w/strawberries. Yum...I am getting hungry just thinking about it. HINT: be sure to chop things up small if you are adding extras and remember they get added, 5 minutes before the ice cream is finished.
Customer Review: CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE???? Summary: 5 Stars
FIRST ATTEMPT: First time to make ice cream and is making Green Tea Ice Cream--recipe from "epicurious.com." Froze ice cream mixing bowl for almost 24 hours. My ice cream did not harden in the ice cream maker after 40 minutes of churning. I think my ice cream mixture was not cold enough so I put the ice mixture back in the refrigerator and the ice cream mixing bowl back in the freezer. Time now is 9:30 p.m.SECOND ATTEMPT: Early next morning, 5:30 a.m. Churn for 30 minutes and the ice cream was a bit fluffier and thicker, but still not firm enough to be soft serve. Put the ice cream mixture back in the refrigerator and the ice cream mixing bowl back in the freezer. After two attempts, is the ice cream mixture safe to try again for the third time? Someone give me some advice.
