Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Evert-Fresh Green Bags Small - Preserve your fruits and vegetablesCustomer Review: These are real money savers! Summary: 5 Stars
I can't express how impressed I am with these bags. I was skeptical about them, but with the economy tanking, I thought it would be a good idea to incorporate some money saving devices into my kitchen.
The bags are amazing. Here are some of the results so far. Romaine from before Christmas is still crisp, fresh, and green on Jan. 28 with no sign of wilt. Without the bags it would have been mush. I was able to eat ALL of a bunch of green grapes without one being mushy or shriveled. Fresh whole mushrooms lasted 8 days until they were gone. Asparagus, yellow squash, and green onions look and taste great after two weeks in the crisper drawer tucked in Evert bags. Even mung bean sprouts lasted an unprecedented five days. Cut Bell peppers last a week; uncut two weeks or more. And I am actually going to be able to use an entire bunch of celery without throwing any of it out. Homemade bread lasts twice as long in the bags.
In other works, these bags pay for themselves in no time.
There's are tricks to using them. Your produce must be bone dry before you add it to the bags. Use a different bag for each type of produce. And be sure that you put a paper towel in each bag to absorb any moisture given off by the food before you seal the bag. Press as much air out of the bag as possible before sealing. For cut vegetables, like Bell peppers, lay a paper towel over the cut surface, then bag.
Don't expect cut foods to last as long as whole, uncut veggies.
You'll need to save your twist ties, since the bags don't come with them, or you can secure with a loose knot (the bags are long enough for that), or use a clothes pin to close.
The bags are reuseable. Just rinse them out with water (no soap or detergent), dry, and they're ready to use again for a total of 8 to 10 times.
I suspect that those who are having trouble with the bags are putting in wet produce, or else they may have excess moisture in their crisper drawer. I believe most refrigerators can be adjusted to decrease the moisture in the crispers.
