Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Espressione Grace Pump Espresso Machine, BlackCustomer Review: Makes Excellent Espresso - Decent Quality for the $$ Summary: 4 Stars
Honestly, for the money, I don't know that you could do much better for the money than this Italian-made machine by Grimac. From what I understand, Grimac hasn't been making their own machines for very long, but has been making replacement parts for leading brands for decades, so their experience runs pretty deep. For a light-commercial quality, 18 bar machine for under $400, it's a decent, although, definitely not top of the line model...you'd pay 3X the cost of this machine for that. Some of the plastic pieces, i.e., the removable drip tray and the water reservoir covers, seem a bit flimsy, and as noted by another reviewer, the silicone sump hoses that route to the reservoir are a bit to contend with and could've been easily designed better. The pump priming procedure is a slight pain, but really you should only have to do this once, unless you run the reservoir dry. I just monitor the level, and top it of regularly to avoid repriming...plus, running a pump dry is not a good thing. Also of note: I don't recall the instructions mentioning using only filtered water in this unit (maybe I missed it?), but this is usually recommended in all pump espresso machines. Not only will your coffee taste better, but it will dramatically cut down on scale build-up.
I bought this machine to replace a Krups 988 15 bar machine, which still works after about 8 yrs. It is being retired to our family's mountain home. The Grace, which I've had for about 4 months now, gets used quite a bit...probably pulls anywhere from 6-10 shots/day for me (single guy) sometimes more when I have company. Going from 15 to 18 bars was noticable. I can go with a slightly finer grind, and tamp my shots a bit more and get fantastic crema with 28-30 second pulls....simply wonderfull. I don't do to many latte/cappacinos, so I haven't used the steamer much, but it does seem to do a decent job...I did not run short on steam, and it brought the milk up to 150 deg in no time at all.
Again, for the price, you won't be disappointed with this machine. It looks very cool (especially in red!) is easy to clean, and most important...makes great espresso.
