Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Escali Primo Digital Multifunctional ScaleCustomer Review: Accurate and convenient Summary: 5 Stars
Here it is. You have found it. You are reading this review because you are looking for a good digital kitchen scale, you have been shopping around, checking your options...but here is the one you need.
A scale is necessary for any serious work in the kitchen, especially for baking when accuracy is essential. I looked all over for just the right one, in both its ability to hold decent weights, in accuracy and over-all design. This little fellow is absolutely perfect, and once I found it my search was over.
There are some that are a lot cooler looking, and if you never want to actually use it but just have a fancy decoration for your kitchen, you might want to try one of those glass-and-chrome numbers. There are some with a lot of extra features and whistles and bells that you will use once for fun and then never again. But for those who are actually doing some work in their kitchen, this functional little fellow has exactly what you need.
The "tare" feature lets you zero out the weight of the container for when you are measuring in bowls and such. It is compact, which is important if your kitchen isn't huge. Durable which means it is going to do its job for a long time. And accurate enough to measure sacks of flower or tiny weights of spice.
Customer Review: Excellent choice for carb counting Diabetics!! Summary: 5 Stars
I am an insulin-dependent diabetic who needs to wear an insulin pump in order to keep tight control of my health condition.
Over the years, I have been measuring food portions with measuring cups, then taking my carb count and calculating how much insulin I need for what I'm eating. Sometimes, using those cups isn't accurate enough (and is sometimes messy)!!
Since purchasing this extremely nice scale, doing all of that work has gotten so much easier and accurate. I set the scale to measure in grams, so every time I look at the back of a food package I look at that measurement (usually in parenthesis) rather than the old inaccurate cup measurement. Then, I put my plate, bowl, etc., on the scale and zero out it's weight using the tare button, weigh one item, zero it out again, etc. for additional meal items. It makes getting exact portion sizes EXTREMELY easy, and has allowed me even tighter control of my glucose levels!
I LOVE this scale, and I'm sure that my doctor will too when I have my next A1C done!
I recommend this for EVERYONE who needs precise measuring of foods for health or dietary needs!
...as an aside, I've used it once as well for weighing mail, so that I could print postage at home. :)
Customer Review: Marvelous scale Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this scale as a combination kitchen/postage scale. I use it more for postage since I mail a lot of different stuff regularly. The scale is exceptionally accurate, with my weights without exception agreeing with the postal service scales. It's very attractive and functional, exceptionally easy to use.
I've noted some reviewers stating the difficulty of seeing the readout if one places anything larger than a small plate on the scale. My simple solution is to first put an "elevator" (I use a 32 oz. plastic yogurt container) on the scale that WON'T block the readout, then use the tare function to zero out the weight of this "elevator". THEN place the item you want to weigh on top of the "elevator". You get an accurate weight since the "elevator" weight is tared-out PLUS you can see the readout clearly since the elevator gets the object up high enough to not block the readout. I mailed an item the other day that was 36" by 24" and by using this "elevator" trick I got the exact weight and could see the readout quite clearly.
To summarize - extremely accurate, practical, attractive, and affordable. My only wish was it had a higher capacity (maxes out at 11lbs.) For most appplications, though I give it five stars all the way.
Customer Review: Works, but not very good Summary: 2 Stars
I bought one of these to replace a sub-$30 scale that lasted about 8 months before the readout went flaky.
This one started by going into some unintelligible error code when I turned it on. If I rotated it 360 degrees it would read '0'. After about a month of daily use it comes on OK. OK unless I have my vessel on it, that is. My last scale, if I had the vessel on it when I turned it on it would start at '0'. This one starts at error code under this circumstance and I have to take the container off and restart, put the container on, and tare it out.
In addition, when I pour the commodity to be measured in the container the reading bounces around a little. If I want 20g I'll pour around the right amount and it will bounce up to 22 or 23 and then settle back to the real weight. If it settles to less than 20 I pour more in and go through the bounce cycle again. There is a couple of seconds waiting for each bounce to settle.
This scale works but it is annoying. Maybe my mistake is buying sub-$30 scales. I thought how hard can it be to make a little weighing mechanism with a led readout. When this one dies, which will probably be soon, I will try a more expensive scale.
Customer Review: Didn't work properly Summary: 2 Stars
After I took this scale out of the box and inserted the batteries the scale worked properly until I turned it off and then back on. It then displayed some gobbledygook until I moved the scale around or turned it over a few times after which it would work properly again until it was turned off and on. Every time I turned it on it would do the same thing. I then called Escali and, to their credit, the representative very pleasantly said it was defective and asked me simply to submit a warranty claim on their website rather than return it to Amazon and they would send me a new scale. I promptly did this and they didn't respond, so I e-mailed them again after a week or so to ask what was happening with my claim. Still I never heard back from them, so after about three weeks I just returned it to Amazon as defective. I wouldn't recommend this scale or any Escali product based on my experience with their poor customer service. Too bad, because the scale, when it was working properly, seemed to do a good job. Caveat emptor - avoid Escali products.
